Leading The Way To The CSO Summer Games
6/5/2009
Newtown police officers and correction officers from Garner Correctional Institution ran in the Newtown leg of the Special Olympics Torch Run on Friday, June 5. The participants take part to show their support for the Connecticut Special Olympics (CSO) program. The Summer Games will begin Friday, June 5, with opening ceremonies at Sacred Heart University, and continue with competition Saturday and Sunday, June 6-7, in Fairfield. Shown running with the torch on a section of Route 302 (Sugar Street) is police patrol Officer Matthew Wood. Unfortunately for a small segment of Newtown's population the route the torch was to follow on Friday was changed, and the runners went across Glover Avenue and Queen Street to reach Church Hill Road instead of turning from Route 302 onto Main Street and then turning at the flagpole onto Church Hill. The good news was, the torch was an unexpected surprise for those who found themselves on Glover and one part of Queen Street late Friday morning.
