Newtown High School’s Jenna Calandro already pole vaulted to South-West Conference and Class LL state championships. She added a State Open title to her winter resume in record-setting fashion.
Calandro pole vaulted 12 feet in the February 17 State Open, at New Haven’s Floyd Little Athletic Center, to edge out the previous record holder. Weston’s Emily Savage pole vaulted 11-foot-11 only a year ago. With Calandro’s effort, she scored all ten of Newtown’s points. Calandro is also Newtown High’s record setter in the pole vault event with a personal best of 12-03, and broke the LL record with her 11-07 finals performance.
It came down to Calandro and Darien’s Madeleine Schneider who had an 11-06 effort in the finals.
“It was a great competition and shows how competitive both girls are. Jenna has had quite a remarkable indoor season and will continue on this winter competing in the Eastern States and New Balance Nationals in March,” Newtown Coach Doug Russell said. “Once winter winds down I am excited for Jenna and the spring season. I believe she has the opportunity to continue with her success.”
Newtown teammate Amy Anyoha placed 14th in the shot put event with a finals distance of 32-09. On the boys’ side, Kevin Gorman placed tenth in the long jump competition with a finals total of 19-10.
