TRUMBULL — Newtown High School’s wrestling team placed 11 in the Class LL state championships, at Trumbull High School, February 15 and 16. The Nighthawks were led by 106-pound weight division grappler Luca Crudo who earned a second-place finish.
Danbury, with 215.5 points, was first among 27 LL schools to score points in the two-day competition. Newtown scored 83.
Crudo was pinned by Glastonbury’s Joseph Rossetti in 48 seconds in the championship match. After a first-round bye, Crudo prevailed in three matches to advance to the finals. Newtown’s James Leuci also had a nice run before falling to Simsbury’s John Depasquale, 5-2 in a battle for fifth place in the 138-pound division. Forest Speed defeated Trumbull’s Tim Douthit via pin in 2:12 to earn third place in 170-pound action.
Other Newtown grapplers to compete in the championships were Ryan King at 120 pounds, Matt Gonzalez at 126, Mike Long at 132, Logan Walsh at 145, Chase Hutchison at 152, Ed Lajoie at 160, Max Temple at 182, Andy Hubina at 195, Trey Dewald at 220, and Stephen Grasso at 285.
Because numerous schools were closed for much or all of the week leading up to the championships in the aftermath of Storm Nemo, all wrestlers were granted an additional two pound weight allowance.
