A Successful Run For The Sandy Hook Families

To the Editor:

As one of the local sponsors of the event, I want to thank everyone who participated in the Sandy Hook Run for the Families on March 23, 2013.  We had over 15,000 runners participate in the 5k/Fun Run and thousands more spectators cheering us on. We raised approx. $400,000 for our families through the Sandy Hook School Support Fund. And most importantly, we achieved our goals: “We honored the memory of lives lost and celebrated the gift of life, uniting in hope for the future.”  These were my thoughts about the day on the way home:

Biting wind. Bursts of snow. Then the sun streaming through the clouds. The choir singing. Birds soaring overhead. Speeches of hope and resolution. We bowed our heads. And the bell rang 26 times. The tears came. We hugged our children close. We looked down at our shoes. Then we ran. All together. For our own reasons. For those we lost and for those we love. To thank those who gave everything of themselves for our children. And to thank those who continue to inspire and to protect. It's just a 5k. A fun run. But taking those steps is everything.

We keep going. We give ourselves a finish line. A goal. A purpose. We keep going. We give all of this meaning and we live fully in the present. We give thanks. So many thanks to be given this moment.
