A few moments later Sandy Hook School math/science specialist Kris Feda introduced Bill Nye “The Science Guy” to the assembled students. Ms Feda explained that Mr Nye has made science his career and shared some highlights from his work.
2014 was a positive planning year for the new Sandy Hook Elementary School.
Consigli Construction oversaw the demolition of the old Sandy Hook School in the fall of 2013, and by 2014 plans for the new building were taking shape, following community input and work between the town and design team, led by Svigals + Partners.
On Monday, November 24, Dr Joseph V. Erardi, Jr, superintendent of the Newtown school district, responded to the report from the Office of the Child Advocate (OCA), released Friday, November 21, saying that his first thoughts go directly to the victims’ families.
“How can I offer any kind of assistance to families?” he asked.
With the 2014-15 school year underway, school clubs have begun meeting and planning activities for this school year. Each school has a few clubs in particular that seem to grow larger every year and do not fail to allure members.
Newtown High School’s Best Buddies club has more than 150 students, according to Jill Gonski, advisor to the club. Best Buddies is a nonprofit organization that creates opportunities for one-to-one friendships and leadership development for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
UPDATE (11:55 am): According to an SHES parent, parents have been notified of the evacuation, and buses will be departing from the school at noon. Some parents have reportedly opted to pick up their children, but all children will be dropped off at their home, following regular bus routes.

According to a school district spokesperson, a “low to no level threat was received” this morning regarding Sandy Hook Elementary School.
A back-to-school picnic was held for Sandy Hook School students and family members during the evening on Thursday, August 28.
The event celebrated the start of the new school year just days before and offered an opportunity for school community members to mingle.
The event was held at Monroe’s Chalk Hill Middle School, where Sandy Hook School is housed, and by the start of the event, students were playing on the school’s playground while chairs, tents, and tables were being set up by parents.
Geralyn Hoerauf of Diversified Project Management told the Public Building and Site Commission (PB&S) at its meeting on Tuesday, August 12, the Phase 3 Site Work package for the Sandy Hook School building project has been approved by the state.
“The team went up to the state on Friday, August 8,” said Ms Hoerauf. “The state did approve the package. It did authorize us to go to bid for site improvements. [Consigli Construction] is working as we speak for the bid packages.”
