The Board of Education was informed at its meeting on Tuesday, May 7, the district has implemented a budget freeze for the current spending year.
With the end of the current fiscal year approaching, Acting Superintendent of Schools John Reed and district Business Director Ronald Bienkowski explained why the school district has implemented a budget freeze that will only allow costs that are considered “musts” to go through.
During a special meeting of the Board of Education on Wednesday, April 24, an expenditure of up to $65,000 from the Sandy Hook School Special Revenue Fund was authorized for providing pre-construction services for Sandy Hook School.
The Board of Education unanimously voted during its meeting on Tuesday, March 19, for former Newtown Superintendent of Schools John Reed to act as interim superintendent in the school district, effective immediately.
During its Tuesday, March 5, meeting the Board of Education announced it received Superintendent of Schools Janet Robinson’s letter of resignation, and by the end of that meeting, the board passed two motions to begin searching for both an interim and a permanent superintendent.

Following a "nonmeeting," which lasted beyond the scheduled time for the special meeting, Board of Education Chair Debbie Leidlein said her board was not prepared to make an appointment for an interim superintendent Tuesday. She also said she was not going to comment on when a decision might be made.

Two days after Superintendent of School Janet Robinson dispatched an e-mail to Newtown’s Board of Education stating the Stratford school board was poised to offer her that district’s top seat, she was offered the position. According to a report from a regional cable news network, Dr Robinson accepted the position following a unanimous vote of the Stratford board.
Newtown Middle School Assistant Principal Anthony Salvatore brought a memorial plaque with him to the Board of Education’s meeting on Tuesday, February 6.
“It is a privilege to be here this evening,” said Dr Salvatore before the board, “to present to the Newtown Board of Education and the Newtown community this gift from our brothers and sisters in Red Lake High School in Red Lake, Minnesota. I hope I can convey to you the spirit of love which was brought to Newtown on December 20, 2012.”
After voting to request security resource officers be placed by the Newtown Police Department at each of the elementary schools in town for next school year, the Board of Education postponed a decision on its 2013-14 budget on Thursday, January 31, until a future meeting. That meeting could take place as soon as Tuesday, February 5.
Board of Education Chair Debbie Leidlein said she did not feel prepared to make a decision Thursday evening on the proposed budget.
