A horrible tragedy occurred in our town. Our pediatric practice lost several patients. I held two of these babies in my arms in the delivery room when they were born. And I was at the firehouse that night with the older brother of one of our children.
Random House Children’s Books has announced the fall 2013 publication of Snowflakes Fall, a picture book written by Newbery Medalist Patricia MacLachlan and illustrated by Steven Kellogg. After 12/14, the author and illustrated were moved, reported Publishers Weekly, to create a book that would bring a message of hope and renewal to children and families affected by the tragedy. The book represents the first collaboration between the longtime friends.

A state legislative task force that is reviewing the issues of reducing gun violence, improving school security, and providing better access to mental health care in light of the December 14 shooting incident at Sandy Hook Elementary School, is making progress toward fashioning new state laws intended to reach those goals, according to state legislators who spoke at a February 19 forum.

TRENTON, N.J. — The largest firefighters union in New Jersey is remembering the 26 victims of December’s Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting massacre in Connecticut by building a playground to honor each one in a community recovering from Superstorm Sandy.
New Jersey and New York will get ten playgrounds each, and Connecticut will get six. Each playground will link the two tragedies with the shared name Sandy to create memorials for recovery and hope.
Sandy Hook Fire Chief and Newtown Fire Marshal Bill Halstead has been a fan of auto racing since his youth. So it may have been an understatement when he describes the experience of unveiling a brand new NASCAR vehicle at the site of the Daytona 500 as thrilling.
Chief Halstead, along with his fiancé, Newtown Town Clerk Debbie Aurelia, were on hand February 14 as NASCAR, Swan Racing and two-time Daytona 500 champion Michael Waltrip announced a special tribute to raise awareness and contributions for the Sandy Hook School Support Fund.
During a February 9 panel discussion at the annual winter convention of the New England Newspaper & Press Association in Boston, State Police Lt J Paul Vance told about 100 journalists, editors and publishers attending a panel on school shootings that the only official and accurate statements regarding the tragic events of 12/14 and the continuing investigation will come from him.
