The Newtown-Sandy Hook Community Foundation is soliciting grant applications for its second round of grant making from The Sandy Hook School Support Fund. Deadline for project applications is December 19.
As teachers headed back to school in Newtown this year they are better equipped to respond to specific students in need after participating in the first phase of Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) training sponsored by The Newtown-Sandy Hook Community Foundation, Inc.
Youth Mental Health First Aid is an internationally recognized, evidenced-based program that has been shown to save lives, expand knowledge of mental health and treatments, increase services provided, and reduce stigma associated with mental health challenges.
In light of the recent report from the state Attorney General on the charitable response to the December 2012 tragedy, Brian Mauriello, Founder/Chair of the Newtown Memorial Fund, Inc. issued an update to the community on behalf of several charitable funds. That group includes the Newtown-Sandy Hook Community Foundation, Inc. (NSHCF), Newtown Lions Club Foundation, Newtown Memorial Fund, Newtown Rotary Club and United Way of Western CT.
The Newtown-Sandy Hook Community Foundation, Inc is soliciting proposals from qualified groups to support the expansion of public education and training to help those that come into contact with adults and young people in the Newtown community.
The foundation is seeking to identify, understand, and respond to signs of trauma, mental health concerns, and/or address barriers that keep those who need mental health services from accessing them.
While many residents surveyed by volunteers of the Newtown-Sandy Hook Community Foundation continue to express a high degrees of anxiety, fear, and stress, it has also become evident that efforts to raise funds to assist these individuals with ongoing counseling are challenged to maintain the level of fundraising required to cover the related costs.
DANBURY – The Newtown-Sandy Hook Community Foundation, Inc. has named a panel of volunteers to serve on a distribution committee to examine unmet needs in the community resulting from the tragedy of 12/14.
The Newtown-Sandy Hook Community Foundation has hired a part-time executive director, and has begun the process of identifying members of the community who might serve on a distribution committee to examine needs in the community resulting from the tragedy of 12/14. The foundation has been charged with overseeing the donations received for and disbursed from The Sandy Hook School Support Fund.

Connecticut Attorney General George Jepsen issued a notice to the United Way of Western Connecticut and the Newtown-Sandy Hook Foundation August 7 indicating the agency and foundation honored donor intent in its decision to distribute $7.7 million of the more than $11 million collected in the wake of 12/14 to immediate victims and their survivors, in the amounts that were designated by the foundation.
Under pressure to produce a transparent review of its decision-making and distribution processes, the Newtown-Sandy Hook Community Foundation's leader said Wednesday that there is no money built-in to the fund for extraneous functions like an audit.
