SCAN To Host Demo By Kathy Anderson, February 26

The Society of Creative Arts of Newtown (SCAN) sponsors two demonstration meetings during most months, each featuring a professional artist who paints and shares tips and techniques in a specific medium. An evening meeting is regularly offered on the second Wednesday of the month at 7:30 pm, and an afternoon meeting is on the fourth Wednesday at 1:30 pm.

Meetings are held in the lower level of Newtown Meeting House, 31 Main Street (at the flagpole). Meetings are open to the public at no charge.

On February 26, SCAN will welcome Kathy Anderson, who plans to offer an afternoon  program on creating a floral using oils.

Ms Anderson began her formal training in commercial art but quickly found it too confining. Experimenting with styles and mediums, she gravitated toward her garden and produced distinctive and sought after floral watercolors.

She then made her way back to easel work and fell in love with the range of expression afforded by oils. In 2001, she had the good fortune to meet Richard Schmid when he purchased one of her paintings. The meeting resulted in her being invited to join the Putney Painters under Mr Schmid’s tutelage. Since then she has traveled to Vermont several times a month to paint with Mr Schmid, Nancy Guzik, and her fellow Putney Painters.

A frequent award winner, Ms Anderson is a signature member of Oil Painters of America and Allied Artists. She is also an artist member of the Salmagundi Club in New York City.

According to her website, the artist believes in painting from life whenever possible and carries her paints on her frequent travels. While she believes that a well trained artist is able to paint anything skillfully, she has found that the intensity and emotion in her painting flows from her love of her subjects, whether still life, garden, figure, or the intimate landscape.

Ms Anderson has won numerous awards for her work. Last year she received the Impressionist Award of Excellence at the Oil Painters of America National Juried Exhibition, and was named a finalist in the landscape category at Art Renewal Center Salon Competition.

Reservations are not needed for SCAN program-meetings, but additional information is available by sending an email to SCANart1971@gmail.com.
