Elizabeth M. Markus Balas, 98, died peacefully on February 14, at home with her family by her side. She was the grandmother of Markus Balas of Newtown.
Mrs Balas was born May 23, 1914, a daughter of Susan Kabahik Markus and Julius J Markus.
She was predeceased by her sisters Helen Palinkas, Margaret D. Collins, Marian Markus, and her brother Stephen J Markus. She was also the widow of Anthony Martin Balas.
Elizabeth was born and raised in Norwalk where she attended local schools. After school, she started working at local businesses, and then worked in New York for a number of years. She married Tony Balas in 1936, and later became a stay-at-home mother, homemaker, and a top-notch baker.
Mrs Balas was a member of St Ladislaus RC Church, where her family was part of the founding members. She was a member also of St Matthew RC Church, and a past member of St Matthew New Horizons and Rowayton AARP.
In addition to her grandson and his wife Terri, Mrs Balus is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, a daughter and son-in-law, three additional grandchildren, a great-grandson, several nieces and nephews, and a grandniece.
At the request of the family there were no calling hours. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated on Tuesday, February 19, at St Matthew Church in Norwalk. Burial was at St John’s Cemetery in Norwalk.
