MILFORD – Penalties were a difference-maker as a tough North Branford team put an end to the Newtown High School hockey team’s playoff run. The Division II state tournament’s ninth-seeded Thunderbirds skated to a 5-1 win over the No. 17 Nighthawks in the quarterfinal round at Milford Ice Pavilion on March 9.
Newtown scored first, when Evan Isaacs broke a scoreless deadlock with a power play goal in the second period, but the Thunderbirds reeled off the next five goals – three of which came with the man advantage.
Newtown was outshot 37-19. NHS goaltender Patrick McLoughlin (32 saves) kept things close in the early stages of the game. North Branford led just 2-1 after two periods.
