In an event to benefit the Jessica Rekos Memorial Fund, the stars of ESPN’s College GameDay will be at Newtown High School on Saturday, March 30, from 10 am to 12:30 pm
Jessica was one of the victims of 12/14. One of her passions was learning about whales, and through her memorial fund and this event, her family hopes to raise funds to build awareness for whale and marine mammal research.
The event will bring the stars of the show to Newtown for a morning of fun, Newtown pride, and basketball. There will be a scrimmage featuring the Newtown High School boys’ and girls’ basketball teams — one coached by Digger Phelps and the other by Jay Bilas — and Rece Davis will provide the play-by-play.
After the game, the show’s crew will take questions from the crowd about the ongoing NCAA Tournament, their careers at ESPN, their playing and coaching careers, or anything else attendees would like to ask. The event will conclude with availability for pictures and autographs.
Volunteers at the door to the NHS gymnasium will greet the crowd and accept a minimum $10 donations per person to the Jessica Rekos Memorial Fund for entry into the event.
This is a first-come, first-seated general admission event. Newtown High School’s gymnasium has a maximum capacity of 1,500.
Registration does not necessarily guarantee seating, but those who do register will get into the event faster and have an easier time getting seated.
The event will not be covered by ESPN.
