Newtown’s fire companies were on the scene of a fire at 254 Berkshire Road at until nearly 7 pm, Wednesday, where a structure was destroyed.
Firefighters from all five of the town’s companies, in addition to apparatus and manpower from neighboring towns, were dispatched to the property around 3:20 Wednesday afternoon to the area. The initial call was for a possible structure fire on an property on the eastern side of Berkshire Road but it now appears the fire has destroyed a building on the west side of the state road.
Records in the Newtown Assessor's office list the property owners as Hans and Audra Barth.
Sandy Hook Fire & Rescue Chief Bill Halstead confirmed a fully involved fire when he arrived on scene within minutes of the 911 call that reported the fire. The property is located between the two ends of Chestnut Hill Road; police have closed off the section of Berkshire that runs between Chestnut Hill to through traffic.
Police were also on the scene, as was a crew from Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps. The ambulance transported one person to the hospital with medical symptoms.
Berkshire Road was reopened and the fire volunteers had returned to their stations by 6:50 pm.
