Newtown High School’s boys’ soccer team took the field against New Milford on October 3, and routed the Green Wave 5-1. The Nighthawks then blanked Brookfield 4-0 on October 8 to improve to 6-3-2 this season. Both games were held at Blue & Gold Stadium.
Against New Milford, Newtown came out of the gates quickly, scoring five straight goals until New Milford finally answered in the last ten minutes of the game.
Nate Kalra led the way, scoring two goals, and Brenton Scott added one on a nice assist from Blake Jarvis. Newtown’s fourth goal was scored by Charlie Poarch on a Clay Gattey pass. Gattey tacked on the last Newtown goal before New Milford’s Christopher Byrnes scored the Green Wave’s lone goal for the game.
Newtown’s defense stepped up, allowing only two shots and keeping the ball in the possession of its offense for a majority of the game.
After Newtown and Brookfield were postponed due to inclement weather on October 7, the teams met the next day.
Newtown dominated the first half of the game, scoring three unanswered goals and playing stellar defense. Kalra got Newtown on the board with a shot that skipped past Brookfield’s keeper in the tenth minute. Matt Mossbarger added Newtown’s second goal on a header after a free kick from Logan Puleri.
Gattey scored the last two goals for Newtown. His first goal came in the 29th minute on a nice assist from Kalra. His second was scored in the 50th minute of the game.
“There’s been a really big team effort in training after the tough loss to Barlow. Everyone on the team is determined to win and I think we have proven that we are a top team in the SWCs after three wins over very talented teams. The rest of the season will be very positive if we can keep this up,” Gattey said.
Newtown had beaten Bunnell of Stratford 1-0 on September 30. The team’s game is scheduled for Friday, October 11, when Oxford visits Tilson Field at Treadwell Park for a 3:45 pm start.
