Snapshot: Karyn Holden

Occupation: I work for Prudential Financial in Shelton as a technical product manager. I’ve been there for 16 years.

Family: I’ve been married to John for 13 years. I met him on a blind date, 19 years ago. We have two children. Matthew is 7 and Allison is 5 years old. Allison was Newtown’s First Baby in 2009.

Pets: We have Madison, our 12-year-old collie, and a cat named Sugar. Her full name is Sugar Plum. That’s the name she came with when we adopted her from MEOW in Ridgefield.

How long have you lived in Newtown? We’ve been in Sandy Hook for 13 years. I drove by our house when we were just engaged, and fell in love with it before we had ever seen it inside.

What do you like to do in your free time? I like to spend time with our kids. I like to read, and to scrapbook. I attend the Board of Education meetings regularly. I’m an advocacy chairperson for the Sandy Hook PTA. That takes up some time.

Do  you have a favorite author? Two of my favorite authors are Debbie Macomber and Sandra Brown. They write romance fiction. I joined a book club with 11 other Newtown moms last year, so I’m reading more diverse subjects now.

Do you have a favorite travel destination? I would have to say Lake Winnepesaukee in New Hampshire. I went there as a child a lot, and we’ve taken our kids there several times. It’s very family friendly, the beach is nice, and there are lots of activities. The scenery and mountains in New Hampshire are beautiful, too.

What is the best thing about Newtown? We have a very strong community. I can’t imagine living anywhere else. I’ve met a lot of really great people.

Who has been the greatest influence in your life? My mom, Marilyn Ebreo. She taught me to be strong, honest, independent, and hardworking. I’ve told her this, that if I can be half as good a mother as she was, my kids are going to be all right.

Do you have a personal philosophy? I try to stick to “Be happy, and surround yourself with happy people.” There’s too much negativity in this world.

Do you have a guilty pleasure? It’s dark chocolate! In the warmer months, it’s the Ferris Creamery “Bad Habit,” a dark chocolate ice cream.
