Floral Design With Beth Caldwell

The next meeting of The Garden Club of Newtown will offer just what most people need to take their minds off of the cold and snow and bring flowers into our lives again: “Take the Fear Out of Floral Design” will be the featured topic with a demonstration by Beth Caldwell at 1 pm Tuesday, February 25, on the lower floor of Newtown Meeting House, 31 Main Street (at the flagpole).

A former president of the garden club, Ms Caldwell likes to think of floral design as more than just putting cut flowers in a container. She believes that an arrangement can be a single flower or something more complex, depending on the circumstances. She enjoys the variety of using bulbs, terrariums or other found objects along with the usual flower and foliage plants and will demonstrate creative and inexpensive ideas for everyday flower arranging.

Ms Candwell’s lifelong love of flowers and floral arrangements began in her childhood, growing up in a family with a deep appreciation of nature. The family vegetable garden was surrounded by cutting flowers which were arranged by her mother and grandmother. She especially remembers her grandmother arriving with mason jars filled with the wonderful roses that she grew in her own garden.

While studying Interior Design at Virginia Tech, Ms Candwell took classes in both floral design and indoor plants.  She worked for a second-generation family florist business in Watertown, where she learned to make quick decisions about floral design and also more technical details that are important for a good outcome.

A successful realtor today, her outstanding floral designs are well-known to her friends who are looking forward to learning some of her floral design secrets.

The public is encouraged to attend her presentation. There is a guest fee of $5 for non-members of the club, and registration is not required.

If the Newtown schools are closed for weather-related issues, the program will also be cancelled.
