Laxmen Fall To Conard, Bounce Back In Conference Play

After a 12-7 setback to nonconference foe Conard at Blue & Gold Stadium on April 19, Coach Glenn Adams’ viewpoint was that if his Newtown High School’s boys’ lacrosse team’s first loss was just a “bump in the road,” and his team rebounded, there was nothing to worry about.

Fast forward a couple of days to the team’s return to South-West Conference play and a visit to Pomperaug of Southbury.

Newtown didn’t allow that bump to turn into a bouncy ride, and won 12-3.

“It was nice to get back on track an move forward from this past weekend. Our goal as a team is to learn from our mistakes but look forward to the next play, or game. We do not want to dwell on the past,” Adams said. “We had a solid team effort on Monday night, including contributions from players who stepped in for some of our injured players.”

Jake Ball scored five goals and had an assist, and Deegan Beauchemin and Ryan Sullivan both scored twice in the triumph. Alec Beauchemin and Jared Pearson both scored, Brad Kretz logged a goal and an assist, and Bubba Condon contributed an assist.

Adams saw his team hang close to Conard before the visitors pulled away and turned a 5-4 halftime lead into a 12-6 cushion by the late stages of the fourth quarter. Getting to ground balls proved to be a problem for the Nighthawks in that game.

“We were there, we contested, but they came up with the ground balls,” Adams said after the Conard game. “Some of the same things we did successfully the past couple games we didn’t do today.”

Newtown had beaten New Fairfield 9-5, got past New Milford 12-10, then topped Weston 10-2 to begin the season. In the victory over Weston, on April 17, Sullivan had two goals and two assists, and Deegan Beauchemin had a pair of goals and an assist. Newtown got to 30 ground balls in that win compared to 19 in the Conard game.

Newtown was scheduled to visit Joel Barlow of Redding on April 24 and will host East Lyme in the first of four out-of-conference battles, on Saturday, April 26, at 2 pm.
