  • Memorable Year Ends For Girls’ Soccer Team

    Newtown High School’s girls’ soccer team had its season come to a end in a 2-1 overtime loss to visiting Newington in the Class LL state tournament’s first round at Blue & Gold Stadium on November 4. After leading 1-0 at the half, No. 16 Newtown gave up a goal in the second half and the game winner in overtime against No. 17 Newington. Newtown put up a good fight against Newington, playing stellar defense throughout the entire game. Makenna Cerney scored Newtown’s goal, which was assisted by Jess Keller.

  • Strong Season Ends For Field Hockey Team

    As tough as it was for the Newtown High School field hockey team to come up a goal short in the state playoff opener on November 4, the season — on the whole — can be looked at as a success for its coach and players. The Nighthawks saw their overall rewarding campaign come to an end in a 1-0 defeat to Westhill of Stamford in the Class L qualifying round at Blue & Gold Stadium.

  • Celebration Time! Fourth Graders Beat Shelton For Football Title

    Newtown’s fourth grade football team defeated Shelton 13-7 to claim the Colonial League Orange Bowl championship this past week. The Nighthawks defeated New Milford 27-7 in playoff action the week before, to earn a berth in the title game. Playoff highlights are as follows:

  • Boys’ Soccer Team Falls Short Despite Piling Up Chances

    A couple of great chances turned away by the opposing team’s defense — one from right on the goal line — and a rebound goal by the Wreckers were the difference in the Newtown High School boys’ soccer team’s state tournament loss to visiting Staples of Westport on November 7.

  • Hawk Spikers Suffer Second-Round Exit At Simsbury

    Newtown High School’s girls’ volleyball team saw its season come to an end in the second round of the Class LL state tournament on November 7. The tenth-seeded Nighthawks traveled to No. 7 Simsbury and the hosts prevailed 3-1 (25-22, 25-17, 17-25, 25-15) to advance to the quarterfinals.

  • Nighthawk Swimmers Place Fifth In South-West Conference Finals

    Newtown High School’s girls’ swimming and diving team placed fifth among 13 schools to compete in the South-West Conference championships this past week. The diving competition took place on October 30 and the swim finals were held on November 2 — both at Masuk High School in Monroe.

    Newtown scored 305 points. The winner, Weston, had 522. Newtown’s results are as follows:

    200 Yard Freestyle Relay: 5. Megan McDonald, Annika Fagerholm, Eliza Eggleston, and Amy Martinelli, 1:56.76 32.

  • Boys’ Booters Rebound To Win First State Tourney Game

    Newtown High School’s boys’ soccer team blanked visiting New Britain 2-0 in the first round of the Class LL State Tournament at Blue & Gold Stadium on November 5 to earn a spot in the November 7 second-round clash with Staples of Westport (6 pm at Blue & Gold Stadium).

  • Spikers Fall To Falcons In SWC Championship Match, Rebound In State Opener

    WESTON — Newtown High School’s girls’ volleyball team might have needed a perfect performance to have a legitimate shot at overcoming unbeaten Joel Barlow of Redding in the South-West Conference championship game at Weston High School on November 2. The Nighthawks put up a fight, but couldn’t upset the Falcons — the only SWC team to defeat the Hawks this fall.
