Several racers — car and motocross — of a variety of ages are making names for themselves with standout performances on the tracks. The season heated up during the summer months and continued to stay busy for some competitors right through Thanksgiving. Here are some of the highlights:

The Newtown Youth Basketball Association will hold its annual Food Drive to benefit the Morning Glory Breakfast program at the Dorothy Day House in Danbury this Saturday, December 7. Residents are asked to bring items specified for games below:
*Hawley School: Midget Girls - 11 am to 1 pm. Bantam Girls - 2-4:30 pm – oatmeal.
*Reed: Intermediate Girls - 9 am to 12:30 pm – juice. Junior Girls - 12:45-5:30 pm – coffee.

Newtown High School’s football team nearly erased a three-touchdown deficit but came up just short in a tough-to-swallow 35-33 loss to visiting Ridgefield in their Class LL state playoff quarterfinal round game at Blue & Gold Stadium on December 3.

The Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference (CIAC) Football Committee has approved a request from Newtown High Athletic Director Gregg Simon that if the Nighthawks advance to the Class LL title game, it will be played Friday, December 13.
The CIAC typically schedules one championship on Friday and the remaining three on Saturday. With December 14 being the first anniversary of the events of 12/14 at Sandy Hook Elementary School, Mr Simon had requested a change of game date for his team.

Newtown High School’s football team will host Ridgefield in the quarterfinal round of the Class LL state playoffs at Blue & Gold Stadium tonight (December 3). Kickoff is set for 6:30 pm. Admission is $5 for students and $8 for adults.
The Nighthawks are undefeated and are the top seed in Class LL. Ridgefield brings a 9-2 record into the clash. The winner advances to the Saturday, December 7 semifinals.

MONROE — There haven’t been any defenses that have managed to stop the running game of Cooper Gold this fall. Add the Masuk Panthers, even with the assistance of Mother Nature providing difficult footing on Masuk’s natural surface during a steady light rainfall, to that list. Gold rushed for more than 250 yards — most of which came in the first half alone — and scored five touchdowns to lift the visiting Newtown High School football team to a 42-7 triumph over the Panthers on November 26.

For some, the idea of playing a game or being in a competition involves clicking a controller and moving virtual athletes around a screen. For Grandon Smith, once exclusively a video gamer, his competition of choice now is running — and he’s quickly emerged as a standout on the course and track. Having picked up running only a little more than a year ago, Smith has made some big strides, becoming the No. 2 runner on Newtown High School’s cross country team this past fall.

The Annual Newtown-Masuk football game, traditionally held on Thanksgiving Eve, has been pushed up a day and two hours earlier to Tuesday, November 26, because of expected heavy rain and wind.
The game is to be played, as initially scheduled, at Masuk in Monroe, but the kickoff is now set for 5 pm instead of the original 7 pm start.
