Newtown High School’s golf team competed in the South-West Conference championship at Ridgewood Country Club in Danbury, on May 31, and the Nighthawks finished fourth. Newtown also teed off in the Division I state championship at Fairview Farm Golf Course in Harwinton, on June 4. The Hawks placed 16th among 20 teams. Newtown golfers Brian LeBlanc and Chris Erikson teamed up to participate in the annual Chappa Tournament at Longshore Country Club in Westport on May 23, and the duo had a score of 75.

Newtown High School’s girls’ track and field team placed 10 among 23 schools to score points in the meet, and the NHS boys were 17th among 24 at the Class LL state championship meet, at Willowbrook Park in New Britain on May 30.
Norwich Free Academy, with 94 points, earned first in the girls’ meet.
Newtown scored 23 points. On the boys’ side, host New Britain came out on top with 85.50 points and Newtown scored 13.

The second annual Mad Dash adventure race will be held on Saturday, June 8, at Fairfield Hills. Hosted by the Newtown Youth Academy and Newtown Parks & Recreation, and sponsored by Danbury Orthopedics, the Mad Dash offers participants the ultimate in fitness adventure.
Participants will run, jump, crawl, carry, and climb their way through scenic Fairfield Hills campus, utilizing both its natural topography as well as man-made structures. This fun but challenging course includes physical challenges, running, and skilled events.

BETHEL — The Hat City Cyclists’ 21st Annual CycleFest charity ride will be held on Sunday, June 9, and includes routes through Newtown.
“This event is a great way to meet new people who share a passion for cycling and being outdoors,” said Newtown resident and event-co-chair Monica Roberto. An avid rider for 15 years, she added, “The routes are beautiful. It’s a ton of fun.”

GREENWICH — The Newtown High School boys’ lacrosse team’s season came to an end in an 11-5 road loss to the Greenwich Cardinals in the Class L state tournament’s first round on May 29. The No. 11 Nighthawks (10-6 in the regular season) hung in there throughout the first half before the No. 6 Cardinals (12-4) seized control to advance on a hot, muggy late afternoon.
Newtown trailed just 4-1 at halftime, although the game could have been much closer if for some better execution, Newtown Coach Glenn Adams noted.

GREENWICH — Newtown High School’s girls’ lacrosse team put forth another great effort against a tough FCIAC school but, again, came up just a little bit short. The Nighthawks fell 16-14 at rainy Greenwich in the first round of the Class L state tournament on May 28.

The Connecticut Spokebenders, a wheelchair basketball team that is part of the National Wheelchair Basketball Association, is set to visit Newtown High School on Friday, May 31, at 7 pm, to hold a basketball game.
The event will be open to the public and was set up by NHS student Charlotte Gray as part of her Junior/Senior Project this semester.

BROOKFIELD — They got it done yet again. Newtown High School’s girls’ lacrosse team won its ninth straight South-West Conference title, this time doing so in pull-away fashion despite a season unlike many in the recent past. The second-seeded Nighthawks topped No. 4 Brookfield 13-6 for the SWC Division I championship at chilly-for-May Brookfield High on May 24 to keep the program’s stranglehold on SWC bragging rights at least for another year.

SOUTHBURY — The Leaps of Faith Disabled Skiers will take to the land for an inaugural Lake-to-Lake Charity Bicycle Ride and Poker Run on Sunday, May 26, rain or shine.
“We have been thinking of different ways to raise funds,” said Leaps of Faith President Joel Zeisler “It’s the first time, so we will do our best. This will be a fun event.”
