Newtown High School students were busy working after school on Wednesday, February 18, to prepare for the upcoming musical production of City of Angels.
City of Angels is a musical about a novelist trying to turn a book into a screenplay, and it shows both the plot of the writer’s attempt to create a screenplay and the plot of the fictional film being creating.

In the Winter Percussion’s first competition of the season, Newtown High School scored a 78.45 and walked away with the first place trophy in the Marching Percussion 2A division, defeating host New Milford High School on Saturday, February 21 in a USBands event.

A 40-minute drug sweep at Newtown High School the morning of February 27 resulted in the arrest of three students and the issuing of an infraction to a fourth, according to a press release from Newtown Police Department.

Sandy Hook resident Diana Baxter, author of a series of romance/suspense novels (DuBois Manor, Windswept, and the soon to be released Tainted Glass) centered around a fictionalized version of an actual mansion in North Carolina, has been invited to take part in a two-day book signing in that Southern mansion. “The mansion is rented out for venues, and twice a year they hold this huge tourism event,” Diana tells me. After the event manager read copies of the book, our local author was invited to the Winter Gala.

A “lock-in open” status at Newtown High School has been lifted, according to emails sent to district parents, following an investigation this morning, Monday, February 23.

Police said that on Monday, February 23, that they arrested a youth under age 18 on charges of first-degree threatening and first-degree falsely reporting an incident at Newtown High School.
Police allege that the boy wrote a suspicious note which was discovered by a school staff member, resulting in the school temporarily entering a “lock-in open” security mode.
Police Lieutenant Richard Robinson said both charges filed against the boy are Class D felonies.

Students and family members gathered in Newtown High School’s cafetorium on Tuesday, February 3, to celebrate 23 students who have completed graduation requirements.
A reception, with food provided by the high school’s culinary department, was held along with the ceremony.
NHS Guidance Director Cathy Ostar introduced the event and thanked everyone who helped make the evening possible, including the parents of the graduates.

Yale University’s Whiffenpoofs, a male a cappella group, performed for Newtown High School students during two assemblies on Wednesday, February 4.
NHS Principal Laurie Rodrigue said when introducing the group, the Whiffenpoofs are the most well-known and celebrated collegiate a cappella group.
“We are so very honored to have them with us,” said Dr Rodrigue, who also thanked the high school’s PTSA for supporting the program.

Newtown High School student artists have work on view until February 18 in the Jerry’s Artarama-sponsored “Teen Visions 2015, A Connecticut High School Art Exhibit,” hosted at Sacred Heart University’s Art & Design Gallery.
Students who have art in the exhibit are Zoe Brodskey, Haley Kean, Courtney MacDonald, Catherine Menousek, Emily Radatovich, Helena Rezikoff, Brandon Rodriguez, Rory Staack, and Michael Triantafilidis.
