Its glistening dark eyes stared back at resident Robert Eckenrode as he took a photo of his backyard guest. A barred owl — named “Hootie” or “Daniel,” depending on who in the family is talking — that he first noticed in mid-June sat with its wings at rest, perched on a porch rail.

Wednesday afternoon, June 24, was calm and bright with cotton clouds stretching across a crisp blue sky. The scene was easy to see for the group of interns working at Nettleton Preserve off Castle Hill Road — one of Newtown’s most photographed and most scenic points.

To the Editor:
What is it about birds that we find so fascinating and awe-inspiring? Is it their ability to break the bonds of gravity and freely move in any direction, their ability to navigate across countries or even continents, their songs which capture our imaginations, or their visibility which keeps us so connected to nature?

Visible from Old Castle Drive is a panoramic view looking down on the flagpole, church steeples. and rooflines along Main Street. This past weekend the Newtown Bridle Lands Association (NBLA) held its annual Frost on the Pumpkin Hunter Pace across trails, fields, protected open space and private property. Thank you landowners for keeping this rural tradition alive. NBLA was founded in 1978 while the Fairfield County Hounds (FCH) still called Newtown home. Many FCH members founded NBLA, then called Newtown Bridle Lanes Association which more accurately reflected the original mission of the group; to protect riding trails in this fast-developing town.
