    WASHINGTON, D.C. — Two Newtown residents, the father of one of the 12/14 victims and the daughter of a 12/14 survivor, have been named Champions of Change by The White House. All of this year’s honorees are gun violence prevention leaders, recognized for taking critical steps in their communities to reduce gun violence.

  • Obama To Honor Two Newtowners As ‘Champions Of Change’

    President Barack Obama is planning to honor two Newtown residents, including the father of one of the 12/14 victims and the daughter of a 12/14 survivor, as Champions of Change.

    Sarah Clements, founder and chairwoman for the Jr Newtown Action Alliance, and Mark Barden, director of advocacy for Sandy Hook Promise, are among nine honorees being recognized for taking critical steps in their communities to reduce gun violence. The ceremony is set for Thursday, April 3.

  • Facebook Announcement Meets With Approval From Gun Violence Prevention Groups

    On Wednesday, March 5, Facebook announced a “series of new educational and enforcement efforts for people discussing the private sale of regulated items.” Offers posted on Facebook that indicate a “willingness to evade or help others evade the law, including private sellers of firearms in the US specifying ‘no background check required’” will be prohibited.

  • Community And Compassion Motivate Daniel Barden Highland Mudfest Participants

    DEANSBORO, N.Y. — The Daniel Barden Highland Mudfest takes place this year on April 5, at MJK Farms in Deansboro, N.Y. The 5K obstacle race is organized and run by volunteers, with support from business and corporate sponsors, and incorporates a half-mile Half Pint Kids’ Fun Run for ages 5 to 12, as well as an additional 5-mile timed Mud Run for 250 elite entrants.

  • An Anthem For Sandy Hook

    Vancouver-based vocalist, pianist, and songwriter Robyn McCorquodale is among those around the world who was “rocked by the mass shooting and loss of 20 first-graders and six educators. An unimaginable assault on beautiful human life,” she said.

    In response, she has written and recorded a single, “Garden of Angels,” that is available as a digital download from iTunes and CD Baby. Proceeds from the song’s sale will be donated to Sandy Hook Promise.

  • Parent Together: A Promise For The Future

    Parent. It is a noun, and it is a verb, pointed out Sandy Hook Promise (SHP) Communications Director Nicole Hockley and Advocacy Director Mark Barden, and it is the action form of that verb that is the thrust of the new SHP program, Parent Together. The initiative was rolled out Thursday, November 14, exactly eleven months after the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

    Both Ms Hockley and Mr Barden lost children, Dylan and Daniel, on 12/14.

  • The Power Of The Love Of Children

    Both the great problems and the great blessings of the world are myriad. The alchemy of transmuting the former into the latter seems to cost us nearly all of our political capital these days — an investment we claim to make in the name of progress. But as we have seen in the past 11 months, the great problem of gun violence and the renewed debate over it sparked by the 12/14 shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School has not blessed us with progress or even a semblance of serious dialogue on the issue.
