    To the Editor:

    I want to thank The Newtown Bee for hosting the BOE candidates’ forum providing townspeople with the opportunity to hear their thoughts and positions on education matters.

  • School Board Hears Enrollment Report

    Interim Superintendent of Schools John Reed presented an enrollment report to the Board of Education during its meeting on Wednesday, October 16.

    Dr Reed said the report demonstrates that it is best to use its enrollment numbers rather than projected enrollment numbers when planning the next budget.

    “I think they will be more helpful, because they will reflect more of what is happening now,” said Dr Reed.

  • School Board Approves 2014-15 Budget Calendar

    The Board of Education approved its budget development calendar for the 2014-15 fiscal year at its meeting on Tuesday, October 1.

    According to the draft of the budget calendar, Interim Superintendent of Schools John Reed will present the proposed budget to the school board for analysis during a meeting scheduled for January 21. The school board will deliberate and vote for its budget by a scheduled February 6 meeting, before the budget is sent before the Board of Finance and the Legislative Council before going out to referendum on April 22.

  • School Board Approves New Administrators Contract

    The Board of Education unanimously approved a three-year contract between the Newtown Association of School Administrators and the Newtown Board of Education during its meeting on Tuesday, October 1, resulting from negotiations that began on July 3l.

  • School Superintendent Search Continues

    Board of Education Vice Chair Laura Roche said, during the board’s Tuesday, October 1, meeting, the district’s search for a permanent superintendent of school is going well.

  • NHS To Seek Variance For Electric Entrance Sign

    The Board of Education unanimously approved, during its Tuesday, October 1, meeting, to seek a zoning variance from the Planning and Zoning Commission for an electric sign to be placed at Newtown High School’s entrance.

  • DC Shutdown Affects School District

    While Newtown is not feeling any major impacts from the federal government shutdown that went into effect on Tuesday, October 1, school district Business Director Ron Bienkowski described one small effect it has had on the district.

  • BOE Votes To Move Forward With SHS Asset Reclamation Efforts

    With the October 5 referendum on the town accepting state financial assistance to demolish the Sandy Hook School building and to design and build a new facility, the Board of Education took up a few related topics during its meeting on September 17.

    “As we discussed at a couple of other meetings,” Business Director Ronald Bienkowski told the school board Tuesday evening, “we are interested in retrieving useful items from Sandy Hook School before it is demolished.”

  • School Board Begins Superintendent Search

    The Newtown Board of Education announced Tuesday that it is starting its search for a permanent superintendent, while also expressing its gratitude to John Reed for serving as interim superintendent of schools.

  • BOE Hires Assistant Principals For 2013-14 School Year

    With two unanimous votes, the Board of Education hired an interim assistant principal for Newtown High School and an acting assistant principal for Sandy Hook Elementary School during its meeting on Tuesday, August 20.
