The Board of Selectman has created the volunteer post of Poet Laureate and has asked The Newtown Cultural Arts Commission (NCAC) to recruit, screen and recommend a final candidate.
The deadline for submitting an application, and samples of work, is August 1.

During a routine report to her board June 15, First Selectman Pat Llodra said she wants an ad-hoc panel assessing possible future use or repurposing of several public buildings to be prepared to consider Hawley School, if or when the Board of Education determines that facility will be closed.

In preparation for the 40th anniversary Friends of the Library Annual Book Sale, coming July 11-15 to Reed Intermediate School, an exhibit on view at C.H. Booth Library showcases a sample of what will be available at this year’s book sale/library fundraiser.
The exhibit, a collaboration between the library and Newtown Cultural Arts Commission, will be on display through June during regular library hours: Monday through Thursday, 9:30 am-8 pm; Friday, 9:30 am-5 pm; Saturday, 9:30 am-5 pm; and Sunday, 12-5 pm.

Taught and lead by volunteer Hanna Roehrs , a group of weavers were part of the first workshop offered at HealingNewtown in the winter of 2013. That group has continued and expanded, and their work will now be the focus of an exhibit at C.H. Booth Library, 25 Main Street.

For two years, the wonderful people at Tier One have contributed warehouse space to the Newtown Cultural Arts Commission. This past weekend, when the Everwonder Children’s Museum expanded into our space, the fine people at Tier One again came through once again, providing us with alternate warehouse space.

The work of Mary Barrett Anders, who presented Asian brushwork classes at HealingNewtown, is the focus of an exhibit of her work at C.H. Booth Library, 25 Main Street in Newtown. Located in the showcase outside the children’s library, the exhibit — a collaboration between the library and Newtown Cultural Arts Commission — will be on display through March 1 during regular library hours: Monday through Thursday, 9:30 am-8 pm; Friday, 11 am-5 pm; Saturday, 9:30 am-5 pm; and Sunday, 12-5 pm.

The 2015 Newtown Arts Festival winning logo is “Making Music,” a linoleum block print of four Newtown High School Marching Band tuba players that was created by Newtown resident and artist Tracy Van Buskirk.
The selection of this year’s logo was announced recently by Terry Sagedy, chairman of the Arts Festival.

The Newtown Cultural Arts Commission (NCAC) will be sponsoring four classes through the Newtown Parks and Recreation Department.
Thanks to financial support from NCAC, the fee for two of the classes will be $20, and the fee for the other two classes is $25. This initiative is a continuation of the goals of HealingNewtown, which the commission phased out in October.

In celebration of the 75th anniversary of Gone with the Wind, the Newtown Cultural Arts Commission will present a Red Carpet Event and Film Screening on Sunday, November 30, at Edmond Town Hall, 45 Main Street.
Patrons are encouraged to wear their Oscar best to strut the red carpet beginning at 1 pm. Professional photos will be taken by Marleen Cafarelli of Photo Art Works. The movie screening will begin by 1:30, and will include a free popcorn, as well as special refreshments offered at intermission.
