Newtown High School’s golf teams competed in state championships this week. The boys’ squad, with a score of 327, tied for 12 in the Division I match, won by Ridgefield (313), at the par 72 Timberlin Golf Club in Berlin, on June 8.
Josh Houle shot an 80, Colin Patrick had an 81, Graham Hubbert had an 82, Jacob Burden had an 84, and Ryan Patrick shot a 94.

Newtown High School’s girls’ and boys’ indoor track teams participated in the Class LL State Championships at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven on February 16. The meet was originally scheduled for February 15 but got postponed because of snow. The Newtown girls placed 16th with seven points and the boys’ squad was 20th with one point; both lineups had several participants. Glastonbury, with 77, won the girls’ competition, and Danbury, with 71, was tops among the boys. Newtown’s results are as follows:

As tough as it was for the Newtown High School field hockey team to come up a goal short in the state playoff opener on November 4, the season — on the whole — can be looked at as a success for its coach and players. The Nighthawks saw their overall rewarding campaign come to an end in a 1-0 defeat to Westhill of Stamford in the Class L qualifying round at Blue & Gold Stadium.

GREENWICH — The Newtown High School boys’ lacrosse team’s season came to an end in an 11-5 road loss to the Greenwich Cardinals in the Class L state tournament’s first round on May 29. The No. 11 Nighthawks (10-6 in the regular season) hung in there throughout the first half before the No. 6 Cardinals (12-4) seized control to advance on a hot, muggy late afternoon.
Newtown trailed just 4-1 at halftime, although the game could have been much closer if for some better execution, Newtown Coach Glenn Adams noted.

MILFORD – Penalties were a difference-maker as a tough North Branford team put an end to the Newtown High School hockey team’s playoff run. The Division II state tournament’s ninth-seeded Thunderbirds skated to a 5-1 win over the No. 17 Nighthawks in the quarterfinal round at Milford Ice Pavilion on March 9.
Newtown scored first, when Evan Isaacs broke a scoreless deadlock with a power play goal in the second period, but the Thunderbirds reeled off the next five goals – three of which came with the man advantage.

STAMFORD — Coming off a remarkable upset victory at fourth-seeded Crosby of Waterbury in the first round of the Class LL state tournament, the No. 29 seed Newtown High School’s boys’ basketball team couldn’t overcome No. 13 Westhill in the second round. The host Vikings ended Newtown’s campaign with a 56-34 win on its home court on March 6.

WATERBURY — Newtown High School’s boys’ basketball team overcame a six-point fourth-quarter deficit to shock the fourth-seeded Crosby High Bulldogs, 61-58 in the opening round of the Class LL state tournament on March 4.
No. 29 Newtown, a heavy underdog, advanced to visit No. 13 Westhill of Stamford in the second round, at 7 pm on March 6.

HAMDEN — Newtown High School’s girls’ basketball team fought back from an 11-point deficit to take a short-lived lead, but the Nighthawks ultimately fell to host Sacred Heart Academy, 57-52, in a clash between 13-7 teams in the opening round of the Class LL state tournament on February 26.
