Town officials this week again tackled the thorny issue of traffic problems at the flagpole intersection, the five-legged intersection in the town center that holds the 100-foot-tall landmark flagpole where Main Street, Church Hill Road, and West Street meet.
The flagpole, which is not shielded by barriers, stands squarely in the intersection. The massive pole holds several round yellow-and-black traffic signs, informing motorists to “Go Right” around the pole while negotiating the intersection, which has a high accident rate.

Police Commission members this week discussed the many issues stemming from a proposal to move local emergency radio dispatching for 911 police, fire, and ambulance calls from Newtown to a private, nonprofit, nonunionized dispatching center in Prospect, generally expressing skepticism that such a change would be beneficial.

Police Commission members have approved a request from Police Chief Michael Kehoe to start a second job as an instructor for Post University’s online education program in the field of criminal justice.
Commission members approved the chief’s request for secondary employment at a March 5 session.
Chief Kehoe told Police Commission members that the Waterbury-based university’s online program in criminal justice would provide him with flexibility in terms of his role as an instructor.
