On Wednesday, May 20, the Newtown VFW Post 308 inducted new officers for the 2015-16 term. Walter Dolan became the new post commander. Mr Dolan served in the US Army in the Military Police Corps, and was overseas during Desert Storm. At the Newtown VFW, he served as post junior vice commander and adjutant.

The public is invited to attend a Memorial Day Commemoration Ceremony on Monday, May 25, at 11 am, at VFW Post 308, Freedom Defenders Way (formerly 18 Tinkerfield Road, off of Mile Hill Road).
The program will be under the leadership of Quartermaster Jim Lewis.

I read at www.screenfree.org that May 4-10 was (is still) “Screen Free Week,” and the fur on my back stood up. And that led me to realize how connected we are to screens of all kinds. Turning off the computer screen at work turned out not to be an option, for this all paws journalist. Then I started thinking about other links: Kindle, iPhone, iPads, television… what’s a newscat to do?

Memorial Day is a day of remembrance, borne out of the Civil War and a desire to honor those who died in service to this our country.
In 1915, during World War I, Dr John McCrae visited a cemetery in Flanders, France. While there he noticed how the poppy flowers grew “between the crosses, row on row,” and was inspired to write the now famous poem “In Flanders Fields.”

The VFW handicap ramp at the VFW Post 308 canteen, Freedom Defenders Way (formerly 18 Tinkerfield Road), is being overhauled. Donations are sought to offset the cost of the new planks. Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant rails will be installed as well.
Each $25 donation will earn a “dog tag” to commemorate someone/something the donor wishes to honor, and the tags will be mounted on the walkway.

Newtown High School senior Maggie Wruck and her date Kollin McDonald of Stony Brook, N.Y., decided on a Batman theme for the NHS Senior Prom, held this past Friday, April 25, at the Matrix Conference & Banquet Center in Danbury. Maggie donned these shoes, and I hear she customized them herself, hand gluing roughly 10,000 rhinestones all over them, including the Batman insignia. Kollin followed the theme, wearing a Batman bowtie and cufflinks.

Each year, just prior to Memorial Day, members of Newtown Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 308 place new flags on the graves of all veterans buried in Newtown, a way of honoring departed service members each May.

Sandy Hook Elementary School’s PTA Valentines For Troops committee had already made efforts to pack letters, toiletries, chocolate, and Girl Scout cookies provided by Newtown VFW Post 308 together in packages by the time students entered the school’s lecture hall on Tuesday, February 10.

Newtown Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 308 Ladies Auxiliary members are celebrating.
Several members received their 20-year pins Saturday, January 10, “a little something to make the day a little more special and let them know they are appreciated,” said Auxiliary member Susan Dlouhy. “If not for them we would not be as far along as we are.”

During a December 5 ceremony recognizing local and district Patriot’s Pen & Voice of Democracy student essay contest winners, area officials, politicians, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 308 members, educators, and parents gathered at the Newtown Municipal Center. The group assembled before a mural recently displayed honoring Newtown’s veterans. Local attorney and selectman James Gaston, also a judge this year, addressed the crowd. Also sharing time at the podium or lending their support were, from far right, 112th District State Representative-elect J.P.
