  • Newtown VFW Announces Outreach For Teacher’s Family In Nevada

    As many have heard, another school shooting took place on October 21, this time at a middle school in Sparks, Nev. A 12-year old student wounded two fellow students and killed a teacher before taking his own life. The eighth grade math teacher, Michael Landsberry, was a former Marine and an Air National Guard Master Sergeant. He reportedly tried to shield students from the young shooter.

  • Patriot’s Pen Essay Competition Open To Local Students

    Commander James Rebman of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post #308 recently announced the kick-off of this year’s VFW and its Ladies Auxiliary “Patriot’s Pen Essay Competition.”

    Local middle school students in sixth through eighth grade can compete in the VFW’s annual essay competition for the potential to win thousands of dollars.

  • Flags Should Be Lowered For Memorial Day

    All flags should be lowered to half-staff today, in honor of Memorial Day. They should remain lowered until sunset this evening, which will be 8:12 pm.

    President Obama released a proclamation on Friday, a "Prayer for Peace, Memorial Day, 2013," which said in part: 

  • Memorial Day Service Scheduled At VFW

    The public is invited to attend a Ceremony of Remembrance on Monday, May 27, at the Newtown Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 308. The program will begin at 11 am, under the direction of  Past Post Commander Donald Monckton, master of ceremonies.

    The guest speaker will be Newtown First Selectman Pat Llodra.

    The Newtown VFW is at 18 Tinkerfield Road, at the corner of Wasserman Way and South Main Street. 

  • Armstrong & Race Car To Make A Stop At VFW

    Kyle Armstrong will be bringing his dirt modified big block race car to the VFW in Newtown on Sunday, April 7, at 2 pm. The public is invited to see the car and enjoy refreshments at the VFW.

  • DAV Benefits Open House, April 13 At VFW Post

    Two authorized veteran service officers from Disabled American Veterans (DAV) will be at Newtown VFW Post 308 on Saturday, April 13.

    Doors will open at 10 am, and the officers will present a 40-mintue presentation beginning at 11. The presentation, open to all area veterans, their spouses and siblings, will cover veterans’ rights, benefits and entitlements, and the claims process.
