May is upon us and the Newtown VFW, Men’s and Ladies Auxiliaries have quite a few activities and events planned. At the most recent Post meeting, James Rebman, who was reelected to a third year as Newtown Post 308 commander, said, “Spring is when everything is renewed along with our commitment to fellow veterans and our country.”
Prior to each Memorial Day, new flags are put on the graves of veterans at all Newtown cemeteries. This is a time-honored tradition in which members, their families, and others participate.

A lot of laughter and a few tears accompanied the VFW Post 308’s 75th anniversary celebration Sunday, March 2.

VFW members and supporters often stand on the corner of Mile Hill Road and Main Street South to show their patriotism when events such as The CT United Ride, an annual motorcycle ride that honors those lost on 9/11, runs past the post as it moves through Newtown. It is just one way the VFW Post has been part of the community since it was chartered in March 1939. The public is invited to join current and former members to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the post on Sunday, March 2.

Prepared with love from Sandy Hook School students were 44 boxes of Valentine wishes and goods going to service men and women overseas.
With the help of Newtown’s Post Master Cathy Zieff, Supervisor Richard Crowther, and postal carrier David Link, students, parents, and school staff on Friday, February 7, readied packages in an annual Valentines For Troops effort at Sandy Hook School, currently housed at Monroe’s Chalk Hill Middle School.

At the January 15 meeting of Newtown VFW Post 308, the membership agreed that after the recent water damage at C.H. Booth Library they wanted to help residents in any way they could.

Clear skies and a cool breeze greeted the dozens of residents and students from Newtown Middle School attending the Veterans’ Day ceremony, Monday, November 11, at the VFW Post 308 property on Tinkerfield Road.

Newtown VFW Post 308 will host its annual Veteran’s Day Memorial on Monday, November 11, at 11 am. All are welcome to attend the ceremony.
Post Commander James Rebman will be the master of ceremonies and First Selectman Patricia Llodra will be the guest speaker. The memorial will last about one hour and seating is available.
Newtown VFW is on Freedom Defenders Way (formerly 18 Tinkerfield Road), just northeast of the intersection of Wasserman Way and South Main Street.

As many have heard, another school shooting took place on October 21, this time at a middle school in Sparks, Nev. A 12-year old student wounded two fellow students and killed a teacher before taking his own life. The eighth grade math teacher, Michael Landsberry, was a former Marine and an Air National Guard Master Sergeant. He reportedly tried to shield students from the young shooter.

Commander James Rebman of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post #308 recently announced the kick-off of this year’s VFW and its Ladies Auxiliary “Patriot’s Pen Essay Competition.”
Local middle school students in sixth through eighth grade can compete in the VFW’s annual essay competition for the potential to win thousands of dollars.
