Sandy Hook Elementary School’s PTA Valentines For Troops committee had already made efforts to pack letters, toiletries, chocolate, and Girl Scout cookies provided by Newtown VFW Post 308 together in packages by the time students entered the school’s lecture hall on Tuesday, February 10.

Newtown Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 308 Ladies Auxiliary members are celebrating.
Several members received their 20-year pins Saturday, January 10, “a little something to make the day a little more special and let them know they are appreciated,” said Auxiliary member Susan Dlouhy. “If not for them we would not be as far along as we are.”

During a December 5 ceremony recognizing local and district Patriot’s Pen & Voice of Democracy student essay contest winners, area officials, politicians, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 308 members, educators, and parents gathered at the Newtown Municipal Center. The group assembled before a mural recently displayed honoring Newtown’s veterans. Local attorney and selectman James Gaston, also a judge this year, addressed the crowd. Also sharing time at the podium or lending their support were, from far right, 112th District State Representative-elect J.P.

Former Marine Dave Silber and his family want to thank VFW Post 308 in Newtown for sponsoring his retirement party and the kickoff of the Marine Corps Reserve’s Toys for Tots toy drive.
A big thank you to all that attended and an additional thank you for all those who donated to the toy drive during his retirement party. A special thanks to VFW Post 308’s Commander James Rebman for his integral part in organizing the event.

November 11 was originally designated to honor the end of World War I, at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. Known as Armistice Day for many years, the date has become a day to honor all veterans of all of the wars in which this country has been engaged since World War I.
The public is invited to join members of VFW Post 308 for its annual Service of Remembrance on Tuesday, November 11, at 11 am.
The service will take place at the VFW Post, Freedom Defendors Way (18 Tinkerfield Road), off Mile Hill Road.

Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 308 and its Ladies Auxiliary recently announced that the Patriot’s Pen Essay Competition is open for local students through Friday, October 29.
The program was started in 1947, and the national program provides students in sixth through eighth grade the opportunity to express democratic ideas and principles. This year’s theme is “Why I Appreciate America’s Veterans.”

A flag retirement ceremony took place at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 308 Saturday, June 14, on Flag Day, where collections of tattered American flags were honorably retired.
“A flag is retired when it has served its duty,” said VFW Men’s Auxiliary President Robert Arnold. “The ceremony is a respectful, solemn way to say goodbye to an old friend.”

Memorial Day will be observed with the traditional ceremony at VFW Post 308 on Monday, May 26, at 11 am.
All are welcome to attend. The men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces will be remembered by members of the local VFW post.
The Newtown VFW is on Freedom Defenders Way (formerly 18 Tinkerfield Road), off Wasserman Way. The post is open to the public daily from 10 am until 9 pm. Free Wi-Fi is available. A canteen is also on premises for beverages, soft drinks, coffee etc.
