  • Residents Fare Well In Bridgewater

    BRIDGEWATER — A few Newtown residents earned trophies, ribbons and other honors during the 63rd Bridgewater Country Fair, which was presented at Bridgewater Fairgrounds Friday through Sunday, August 15-17.

    Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue Company received the trophy for Best Overall Fire Company following the fair’s opening event on August 15, Bridgewater Fair Firemen’s Parade.

    In addition, other residents received honors for their efforts during the annual three-day event.

  • Intense Thunderstorm Hits Riverside Neighborhood Hard

    A severe thunderstorm, which passed through the area Tuesday evening, focused its strongest wind energy in the Riverside section of Sandy Hook, causing many trees to fall, resulting in extensive property damage and electrical outages in that neighborhood along Lake Zoar, near Interstate 84.

  • Annual Easter Flower Sale Next Weekend

    The Ladies Auxiliary of Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue will present its annual Easter Flower Sale on Friday and Saturday, April 18 and 19.

    Members of the auxiliary will be at the Sandy Hook main station, 18-20 Riverside Road, from 10 am until 6 pm each day.

    Available for purchase will be baskets of flowers, flats of annuals, potted plants, and more. The sale regularly offers lilies, hydrangea, and other seasonal favorites.

  • SUV Crash Closes Route 34, Causes Electrical Outages

    Roadblocks to through-traffic initially were set up at the intersection of Berkshire Road and Toddy Hill Road (above), the intersection of Berkshire Road and Sherman Street, and the intersection of Pole Bridge Road and Jeremiah Road. 

  • Fire Company Golf Tournament Teeing Up

    MONROE — Sandy Hook Fire & Rescue will host the 26th Annual George & Timothy Powell Memorial Golf Tournament on Monday, July 15, at Whitney Farms Golf Course in Monroe.

    The tournament will be an 18-hole siren start, rain or shine, with golf to begin promptly at 9 am.

  • Another Successful Lobsterfest

    To the Editor:

    The officers and members of Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue Co. would like to thank our family, friends, fellow firefighters, residents of Newtown and out-of-town guests for helping to make our 26th annual Lobsterfest a success.

    The rain did not hold people away on Friday night, as it remained steady. Saturday was busy, but we were able to feed the entire crowd.

  • LobsterFest Time In Sandy Hook

    Members of Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue Co., its Ladies Auxiliary, Junior Corps and even family members and friends will all be volunteering their time to put on the 26th Annual Sandy Hook LobsterFest. The two-day event returns to Sandy Hook Fire & Rescue’s main station on June 7-8. Seated in front are four of this year’s LobsterFest committee chairs: George Lockwood Jr, Karin Halstead, Anthony Capozziello and Mike Burton.

  • New Home For A Local Fire Engine

    Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue Company saw its former Engine 443 in its new home in Guatemala recently. The company had donated the engine after it suffered structural damage in Superstorm Sandy last October.

  • Mother’s Day Plant Sale, Friday & Saturday In Sandy Hook

    The Ladies Auxiliary of Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue Company will be presenting their annual Mother’s Day Plant & Flower Sale Friday and Saturday, May 10-11, at the Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue main station, 18-20 Riverside Road.

    Members of the auxiliary will be at the firehouse on Friday afternoon from 2 until 6 pm, and then on Saturday from 9 am until 6 pm.
