For the second meeting in a row, the Board of Education postponed a decision on its five-year Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) on Tuesday, September 1.
A decision is expected during the board’s next scheduled meeting, September 15.

Geralyn Hoerauf of Diversified Project Management presented the sixth phase of the new Sandy Hook Elementary School building project before the Board of Education during its meeting on Tuesday, September 1.
“As you might recall, every time we submit a phase to the State of Connecticut, we have to have that phase of construction documents and budget approved first by the Public Building and Site Commission as the building committee then you bring them to the Board of Ed,” said Ms Hoerauf.

Within a week of a Facility and Enrollment Study Committee report presentation, the Hawley Elementary School community delivered a sharp response to the idea of closing the school.

A facility and enrollment study, presented by Superintendent of Schools Joseph V. Erardi, Jr, at the Board of Education’s meeting on Tuesday, June 2, recommends closing Hawley Elementary School due to declining enrollment.
While Hawley Elementary School was the main focus during the presentation, cost estimates were also provided for the closure of the middle school.
“This is difficult work, and this is work that makes folks very unhappy,” said Dr Erardi.

After Superintendent of Schools Joseph V. Erardi, Jr, presented configurations during the Board of Education's meeting on Tuesday, June 2, for closing a school in the district, he said the Facility and Enrollment Study Committee endorses closing an elementary school.
Hawley Elementary School was the main focus during the presentation, but cost estimates were also provided if Newtown Middle School were closed.

The Board of Education approved on May 19 a pilot child care program that will be available for district staff and heard a report from a Climate and Culture Committee.

Jeremy Richman introduced himself to the Board of Education during its meeting on Tuesday, May 19, before he explained an interest in a collaboration between The Avielle Foundation and the school district.
Dr Richman then said that as the parents of Avielle Richman, one of the victims at Sandy Hook School on 12/14, he and his wife, Jennifer Hensel, began the foundation to stop violent events and to answer why such events occur.
