  • Sluggers Have Mix Of Veterans And Youth

Members of Newtown High School’s baseball team performed/executed fielding and base running drills on the turf at Blue & Gold Stadium (because the grass playing field was soggy after the snow finally melted away) on April 1 as they prepared for the start of the campaign.

The key to some success this spring, Coach Memoli anticipates, is playing fundamentally sound ball; smart base running and solid fielding will be important.

“We have to make sure we don’t hand outs away,” the coach said.

  • Opportunities Abound As Hawk Sluggers Replace 11 Graduates

Sure, there’s always tough Pomperaug of Southbury, Bunnell of Stratford, and other formidable South-West Conference foes, but members of Newtown High School’s baseball team don’t really have to look any further than their own bench to find perhaps the biggest competition early on this campaign.

Only three of members of the Nighthawks — pitcher Mike Davis, shortstop Virgil Procaccini, and catcher Austin Raftery — have varsity experience under their belts as the Nighthawks take to the diamonds this spring.

  • Sluggers Have New Look, Same Championship Goals

Gone from last year’s South-West Conference champion squad are eight team members who graduated. Still in place, however, is the goal to succeed. Newtown High School’s baseball team is striving to repeat as SWC champs and, in fact, go deeper in the state tournament this time around.
