  • Carney’s Trick (Plus One) Treats Booters To Playoff Win

    A solid team effort led to a one-man offensive outburst. James Carney scored four goals and assisted on another as the third-seeded Newtown High School’s boys’ soccer team crushed visiting New Fairfield, the sixth seed, 5-2 in the South-West Conference tournament quarterfinals, at Blue & Gold Stadium, on October 30. Goalkeeper Zach Laros played both halves and made nine saves.

    It nearly ended only a few times along the way. There was a nail-biting outcome here or there, including some conference tournament battles, but the Newtown High School girls’ lacrosse team always found a way to keep its winning ways against South-West Conference opponents alive. Finally, after nearly seven full seasons, and parts of eight campaigns, of SWC dominance, the Nighthawks tasted defeat at the hands of a conference foe.
