Emoticons, Braille, and Morse code are among the various forms of language featured in the Boy Scouts of America’s newest merit badge, Signs, Signals, and Codes. Introduced in February by Boy Scouts of America (BSA), the badge is the 135th addition to the merit badge program.

Cub Scout Pack 170 of Sandy Hook is set to hold a registration event for boys entering first to fourth grade on Wednesday, May 20, in the pavilion of Treadwell Park, 39 Philo Curtis Road. The event will run from 6 to 8 pm. Ice cream will be served as part of the event.

On Sunday, January 18, Seth Barrett, a local Boy Scout from Troop 370, will be hosting an item drive for his Eagle Scout project.
The event will be held in the front horseshoe of Newtown Middle School, 11 Queen Street, from 10 am to 4 pm.

Newtown High School Senior and Boy Scout Riley Page will conduct a sheet drive this weekend to support Saint Vincent de Paul’s Homeless Shelter in Waterbury.
Riley is collecting new or gently used clean twin sheets, towels and toiletries for the men, women and children who stay at the shelter. The collection is being done for his Eagle Scout project.
The drive is scheduled for Saturday, March 15, from 10 am to 4 pm. Items can be dropped off at Oberg Insurance Agency, 33 Main Street (next to the flagpole).

Sandy Hook Cub Scout Pack 170 is inviting all boys entering first through fourth grade to join their Pack. Registration will take place on Wednesday, May 15, at Rauner Hall in Newtown United Methodist Church, 92 Church Hill Road in Sandy Hook, from 6:30 to 8 pm.
In addition to registering new scouts, the Pack will also be reregistering current scouts for the 2013-14 Scout year. Registration is $55 (cash or check payable to Pack 170). For the optional subscription to Boys’ Life magazine, please add $20 ($12 if new to scouting).
