Winter has frozen Lake Zoar from shore to shore, and the ice is thick — circumstances some residents have not seen in several years.
“The last time the lake was frozen was four or five years ago,” said Waterview Drive resident Cindy Palkimas. She has been a lakeside resident for 13 years, she said. Although she remembers the lake freezing over completely in the past, she said, “This year the ice is the thickest it’s ever been since I moved here.”

Hanover Road resident Scott Conant has witnessed a “huge change” in the invasive zebra mussel population in local waters this year. He has seen the numbers increase from “just a few two summers ago, to many last year, to an explosion this year,” he said in a recent e-mail.
A Friends of The Lake (FOTL) board member living along Lake Lillinonah’s shore, Mr Conant first sent the alert to other members in late October after inspecting the underside of his dock.

I “paw-sed” to look in the case just outside of the Children’s Department at the C.H. Booth Library, last week. Four lovely little cottages, crafted by artists in California and Oregon, and cast in sand mailed to the artists from Newtown, are on display. The fairy cottages, each depicting a different season of the year, are lovely works, and worth taking a moment to look at, should you be at the library sometime before the middle of December.

Bit by bit, piece by piece, police and a group of volunteers are separately seeking to assemble a jigsaw puzzle of sorts that would point the way to the missing Robert “Hoagy” Hoagland, 50, of Glen Road, Sandy Hook, a man who went missing from his home in late July and has not been heard from since.
On Sunday, September 1, police, working with Newtown Underwater Search And Rescue (NUSAR) and the Lake Zoar Authority Marine Patrol, searched a section of Lake Zoar upriver of the Rochambeau Bridge in seeking any evidence of Mr Hoagland.
