VFW Commander James Rebman commented on Monday at the Memorial Day ceremony that he recalled watching Memorial Day parades way back in 1968 “and the guys with the funny hats.” Well, now Jamie, a veteran, is one of those guys in the funny hats, he observed, and Memorial Day has taken on a whole new meaning to him.

“It’s an important tradition for us to come here,” said Richard Gottmeier, prior to the start of the Monday, May 26 ceremony at the VFW Post 308 honoring veterans who have died in service to the country. Mr Gottmeier served 28 years in the Army and Army Reserves, he said, is a member of the VFW, and comes from a family tradition of serving the country since the Revolutionary War. “We pay our respects today to those who didn’t get to come home. They are the true heroes,” he said.

In observance of Memorial Day, all United States and state flags should be lowered today. Per a proclamation from President Barack Obama, flags should be lowered from sunrise until noon today.

May is upon us and the Newtown VFW, Men’s and Ladies Auxiliaries have quite a few activities and events planned. At the most recent Post meeting, James Rebman, who was reelected to a third year as Newtown Post 308 commander, said, “Spring is when everything is renewed along with our commitment to fellow veterans and our country.”
Prior to each Memorial Day, new flags are put on the graves of veterans at all Newtown cemeteries. This is a time-honored tradition in which members, their families, and others participate.

While others in town fired up their grills, or packed up for a day at the beach or on the water, a number of Newtown residents gathered at the property of the VFW Post 308 on Tinkerfield Road, just off of Wasserman Way, to observe the reason most Americans had the day off, Monday, May 27, Memorial Day.
Kevin Booker and his son, Hunter, staked out a shady spot at the edge of the lawn, in anticipation of the VFW Post 308 annual Memorial Day ceremony.

O Lord, Father of All Men, We come to Thee in humble supplication.
Thou knowest we have strayed much from Thy laws.
Yet, O God, Thou hast blessed us abundantly, and our children.
Thankful for these blessings and hopeful in the promise of Thy forgiveness, we now beseech Thy special guidance and care.
Again in this world of mortal men wars and threats of wars beset us.
Jealousies and rivalries of nations plague us.

June is National Adopt A Cat month, and I like #1 on the American Humane Society website: If you’re thinking about adopting a cat, consider taking home two.
If adopting a cat is out of the question, how about going to look at some big cats? Saturday, June 15, is Newtown Day at the Beardsley Zoo, 1875 Noble Avenue, Bridgeport. Show your Newtown identification, and entry to the zoo is just $5, 10 am to 4 pm. Seems like it could be at grrr-eat outing.
