    October is Adopt A Shelter Dog Month and The Bee is making it easy for residents who want to help some local animals waiting for their forever homes. From October 10 until October 31, a drop-off box will be located in the front lobby of The Bee’s office, at 5 Church Hill Road, for Newtown Animal Shelter donations.

    Laurie and Jim Borst rubbed the sleep out of their eyes and looked again last Friday morning. Sure enough, there was a black bear ambling across their Beechwood Drive yard. Laurie was able to snap a photo of the bear, which she guessed weighed about 150 pounds, before it disappeared into the woods. It was surprising, she said, how quickly the bear was moving. You might want to take a peek outside, if you live in that Sandy Hook neighborhood, before putting any small pets out to enjoy the morning or evening air.

    I’m happy to hand out my first Good Egg Award of the year. Beginning in early December, at the Sandy Hook Tree Lighting, the Foundry Kitchen and Tavern in Sandy Hook Center began handing out customized baseball caps in return for donations to support the Newtown Fund Holiday Basket program. This program uses 100 percent of the proceeds to support Newtown families in need, throughout the entire year, with food and fuel assistance, utility bills, rent, and medical expenses.

    You may have seen our own Newtown personal chef Kristopher Plummer (widely known as Chef Plum) on episodes of Chopped or The Taste, or maybe you’ve run into him doing the family shopping at Caraluzzi’s. If not, be sure to tune in to the Food Network this Sunday evening, at 8 pm, when Chef Plum competes against three other chefs in Guy’s Grocery Games. Chef Plum tells me the show, hosted by Guy Fieri of Diners, Drive-ins and Dives fame, is a the old Supermarket Sweep meets Chopped. How does our local cooking personality fare?

    It’s October and that makes me think about Halloween on Main Street (black cats, of course), witches — and pumpkins. And pumpkins make me think about McKenzie Page’s Third Annual Great Pumpkin Challenge. The NHS sophomore invites people once again to carve or decorate a jack-o-lantern, drop it off at her 14 Main Street home, and hopefully drop $5 in the donation jar there. The money she collects each year goes to charity to fight cancer.

    Ed Atkinson might think he is being sneaky, but his neighbors know that he is the one responsible for (not so secretly as he thought) replacing a damaged mailbox in the Westwood Terrace neighborhood, while the family was off to church on Sunday. Ed, you are definitely a Good Egg!

    Speaking of good eggs, the heat wave seems to have brought out the scientist in everyone. How many people have tried to fry an egg on the a) sidewalk b) car hood or c) roof top? Let me know…

    I may be a bit behind the times, or felines, but I just learned this week that cat cafes are a popular Japanese hang out spot where caffeine aficionados can enjoy their favorite beverage in the presence of cats. I haven’t been able to find one in Connecticut, but if one was to open up in Newtown, you know who would be its first customer!

    The New York Times’ Sunday Book Review by Dawn Drazl this past weekend calls Poor Man’s Feast: A Love Story of Comfort, Desire, and the Art of Simple Cooking “one of the finest food memoirs of recent years.” If that’s not enough to send you scurrying to get a copy of the book, maybe knowing that it is penned by Newtown author and award-winning blogger Elissa Altman will do the trick. Elissa’s been crisscrossing the country promoting her new book this spring.
