    Newtown Police Department has announced temporary road closures, detours and No Parking zones that will be in effect on Monday, September 1, before, during and immediately following the 53rd Annual Newtown Labor Day Parade.

    The 53rd Newtown Labor Day Parade will start at 10 am on Monday, September 1.

    The parade forms on Main Street, near its intersection with Currituck Road. The parade proceeds southward on Main Street, turns left onto eastbound Glover Avenue, and then turns left onto northbound Queen Street, where it ends.

    Staging the parade will require that all roads leading to the center of town be closed to traffic from approximately 9:40 am to approximately 1:15 pm, police said.

  • Several Roads To Close For 5K Road Race

    Police said that several roads will be closed to traffic at and near Fairfield Hills on Saturday, March 29, while the Sandy Hook 5K Road Race is being held in that area.

    Police will be stationed along the race route to prevent traffic flow there.

  • Traffic Alert: I-84 To Be Closed Two Weekends At N.Y.-Conn. Border

    The New York State Department of Transportation is replacing two bridges carrying Interstate 84 over Dingle Ridge Road in Southeast, N.Y. The work is being accelerated to minimize traffic impacts, but will require the interstate to be closed in that area during two upcoming weekends.

    Traffic delays are anticipated. 

    The weekend of September 21-22, I-84 West will be closed at Exit 1 in Connecticut, and directed back onto I-84 at Exit 20 in Southeast.

  • 5K And Kids Run August 31, Road Closures & Detours Planned

    The 8th Annual Newtown Road Race 5K and Kids Fun Run, presented by Nike, will take place at Dickinson Park at 9 am on Saturday, August 31. 

    Benefiting Newtown Youth & Family Services (NYFS), this race annually draws 500 to 600 runners plus another 200 children in the fun run. Race organizers are expecting a larger than usual turnout this year.

    The gently rolling course, certified by USATF, begins and ends at Dickinson Park and incorporates both paved and dirt roads. It is ideal for runners and walkers.

    The 52nd Newtown Labor Day Parade is scheduled to start at 10 am on Monday, September 2, returning to its morning start time following the two preceding parades which were held in the afternoon.

    The parade will start at the head of Main Street and then proceed southward on Main Street to eastbound Glover Avenue, and then to northbound Queen Street.
