Several dozen firefighters from eight volunteer fire companies mobilized midday on Wednesday, November 5, in response to an extensive brush fire of suspicious origin in Sandy Hook, which spread across about five acres of rugged terrain, blackening the forest floor near Sugarloaf Road and Sherman Street.

Two years ago, when the governor signed Public Act 12-152, An Act Concerning the State’s Open Space Plan, the new law was heralded as evidence of Connecticut’s enlightened approach to conservation. Not only was the initiative seen as an endorsement of the state’s goal of extending open space protections to 673,210 acres — 21 percent of the state’s area — by 2023, it was intended to foster the same kind of strategic planning to open space protection that is normally accorded to land development.

HARTFORD — Governor Dannel P. Malloy announced today that Connecticut is taking another step forward toward achieving a cheaper, cleaner, and more reliable energy future for residents and businesses with the selection of two projects that will generate large amounts of electricity from clean energy sources, helping to achieve renewable energy goals at lower costs to ratepayers.
