  • NHS Band & Guard Competing At National Championships This Weekend

    The Newtown High School Marching Band & Guard are headed for the USBands National Championships on Saturday, November 15.

    Competing in Class V Open, the competing bands will take the field at MetLife Stadium in Rutherford, N.J., with Newtown slated to compete at 8:27 pm.

    The National Championship features the best of the best from across the United States. Newtown Band Director Kurt Eckhardt said he believes his band could be in the top five.

  • NHS Marching Band & Guard Place Second In USBands ‘Music In Motion’ Power Regional

    Competing against 30 of the best marching bands in the East, Northeast, and Southeast circuits, the Newtown High School Marching Band and Guard not only reached their goal of making it into the finals of the USBands “Music in Motion” power regional, but they came within just two points of first place Saturday, November 1.

    The event was held at the stadium of the US Navy-Marine Corps Academy in Annapolis, Md.

  • NHS Marching Band & Guard Receive Cadets Award Of Excellence

    For the second year in a row, the Newtown High School Marching Band & Guard received the prestigious Cadets Award of Excellence at the USBands New England Championship, held Saturday, October 25, at Veterans Memorial Stadium in New Britain.

    Awarded to the school that is determined to be the best in show for creativity and showmanship, the Cadets Award of Excellence can be given to any competing band, regardless of size or class level.

  • NHS Marching Band & Guard Preparing For Grasso Festival This Saturday

    The Newtown Marching Band & Guard will honor all 32 of its graduating seniors this Saturday, October 18, when the school hosts the 18th Annual Joseph P. Grasso Music Festival at the high school’s Blue & Gold Stadium.

  • NHS Marching Band & Guard Takes Top Spot At USBands Event

    Tightly gripping the First Place Class V Open trophy, Newtown High School drum major Rachael Fuchs was beaming after the NHS marching band and guard’s win at Cheshire High School on Saturday, October 11.

    “This is great!” the Rachael said, as she and fellow drum major Humza Hashmi congratulated the 136 musicians and guard members.

  • NHS Marching Band & Guard Takes Second Place At Trumbull Classic

    TRUMBULL — The Newtown High School Marching Band & Guard increased its previous Musical Arts Conference (MAC) competition score by eight points to take second place at the Trumbull Classic, held on Saturday, September 27, at Trumbull High School.

    In what many consider the first “real” competition of the season, performed outdoors on school’s football field under clear skies, Newtown gained ground on rival Norwalk High School and is now just four points behind the defending National Open Class champions.

  • First Time This Season— NHS Marching Band & Guard Perform ‘Arachne’

    Lightening and heavy rain forced the Newtown High School Marching Band and Guard indoors for the past two Saturday afternoons, but last Saturday, September 13, the band finally had the opportunity to perform their new show “Arachne,” a tale of black widow spiders spinning their web of intrigue.

  • Grasso Festival Highlights Local Marching Bands And Guards

    It was “standing room only” on Saturday, October 5, as Newtown High School hosted the 17th Annual Joseph P. Grasso Marching Band Festival, which featured nine competing bands and the 123-member Newtown Marching Band and Guard in exhibition.

    Thirty graduating Newtown High School seniors and their parents were saluted after the musicians and color guard performed in their final “Home Show” to a packed and appreciative crowd.

  • NHS Band & Guard Preparing For Annual Grasso Festival

    Since midsummer, Newtown High School Marching Band and Color Guard members have been busy preparing for this year’s competitions and shows, including the upcoming annual home show, set for Saturday, October 5.

     Looking at the season, with rehearsals and competitions already scheduled, NHS Band Director Kurt Eckhardt said this week that he is “looking forward to seeing this band continue to grow.”
