James Carney scored four goals and assisted on another as the third-seeded Newtown High School’s boys’ soccer team crushed visiting New Fairfield, the sixth seed, 5-2 in the South-West Conference tournament quarterfinals, at Blue & Gold Stadium, on October 30. Goalkeeper Zach Laros played both halves and made nine saves.

    Unbeaten in 11 straight games to close out the regular season, Newtown High School’s boys’ soccer team certainly couldn’t ask for much more momentum heading into the postseason, but the Nighthawks are doing anything but getting caught up in their own winning ways.

    “We’re not that team — we know who we are. We’re just going out and playing hard every game,” Newtown Coach Brian Neumeyer said.

The two teams got together for Newtown’s senior night in the last regular season home game for the Nighthawks. Newtown came out victorious, 2-0.
