Gift of Life

  • The Top of the Mountain

You may have read about 2-year-old Bezalel Alquilos of Cebu, Philippines, in the February 27 Newtown Bee story, “Newtown Rotary Gift of Life Keeps On Giving.” Bezalel and his mother, Hazel, have been guests of the Dan Rosenthal family this past month, while Bezalel underwent some lifesaving heart surgery at Children’s Medical Center in Hartford. The surgery has been paid for through the local Gift of Life challenge, as well as the generosity of surgeon Dr Harris Leopold and Children’s Medical Center.

It could be an idyllic family scene from any one of many homes in Newtown: three older children clustered about a baby in a bouncy seat, while the fire in the fireplace crackles behind them and the adults chat amicably nearby. This family picture, though, is a special blend of children and adults.

  • Newtown Rotarians Make Personal Connections With Gift Of Life Recipients

For only the second time since the Rotary Club of Newtown has undertaken sponsorship of children in need of heart surgery, through the Newtown Initiative of the Rotary International Gift of Life Program, local members were able to meet face-to-face with children they are helping. On Monday, August 18, Newtown Rotary members Pat Caruso, Mike Toll, and Tom McKirdy greeted 13-year-old Arben Lajqi of Peja, Kosova, and 2-year-old Leona Hoti of Rahovec, Kosova.
