Newtown's appointed Municipal Building Strategic Plan Committee is advising the Board of Selectmen to scrap the more costly idea of renovating Town Hall South to permit the growing police force to expanding into the full town-owned facility — a former tractor sales and service business. Instead committee members are advising officials to move forward with plans to build a new facility, presumably on public land at Fairfield Hills.

For more than an hour July 20, members of Newtown’s Municipal Buildings Strategic Plan Advisory Committee heard preliminary observations from consultant Ken Best of DRA, Inc detailing a series of findings about three key town-owned buildings the panel is evaluating for best use potential, repurposing, sale, or even possible demolition.

Discussion during an April 7 Board of Selectmen meeting revealed that the eventual development of a community center being funded by a $15 million gift from General Electric may set up a domino effect of town department relocations.
Shortly after a motion was made and unanimously approved to officially accept the GE donation, and a separate motion was approved to appropriate $450,000 for preconstruction and design work, First Selectman Pat Llodra initiated a discussion on strategic planning for municipal facilities.
