Newtown High School’s girls’ tennis team extended its winning streak to ten before dropping a 5-2 decision to Weston in the regular-season finale, on May 13; the finished 11-5 this season. The boys’ squad, meanwhile, finished off the regular season with six straight victories to post a 10-4 mark. Results from this past week’s matches are as follows:

Newtown High School’s boys’ tennis team defeated host Joel Barlow of Redding 5-2 on April 15, then toppled visiting Brookfield 7-0 the next day. Newtown edged Barlow, 4-3 in a rematch, on April 21.

Newtown High School’s girls’ tennis team defeated host Masuk at Monroe’s Wolf Park on May 9, topped host Notre Dame-Fairfield on May 12, and defeated visiting Stratford, at Dickinson Park, on May 13 — winning all three matches by 7-0 scores.
The Newtown boys, meanwhile, won two of three matches at home this past week. The Nighthawks topped Masuk in a shortened match, 5-0, on May 9, lost 5-2 to Pomperaug of Southbury 5-2 on May 12, and edged New Milford 4-3 the next day.

It was a successful week for Newtown High School’s boys’ tennis team as the Nighthawks went on the road and toppled New Fairfield 5-2 on May 2 then bested host Pomperaug of Southbury and visiting Joel Barlow of Redding, both by 4-3 scores, May 5 and 6.

Newtown High School’s girls’ and boys’ tennis teams both picked up victories this past week, with the squads defeating Bethel and Brookfield, and falling to Weston.
Maureen Maher, coach of the girls, has been pleased with her new-look team this spring. The two-time South-West Conference champions lost eight players between graduation, moves out of town, and players not returning, but that hasn’t prevented success. The Nighthawks won five of their first seven matches before a hard-fought 4-3 setback to Weston on April 28.
