Newtown High School’s football team overcame some turnovers, costly penalties, and overall inexperience to hold off a veteran-led Bethel squad for a 22-14 victory under the lights at Blue & Gold Stadium on September 20. The Nighthawks (2-0) made their home opener a victorious one despite being held scoreless in the second half for the second week to begin the season.
Newtown High School’s girls’ and boys’ cross country teams both came away with a trio of wins in home races on September 17. Newtown’s runners came out on top against Bethel, Masuk of Monroe, and Notre Dame-Fairfield in a 5K race on the trails adjacent to Reed School.
Newtown High School’s girls’ swimming and diving team began the season with a 96-85 win over visiting Joel Barlow of Redding on September 12, then came up a little short in a 96-88 setback to Brookfield, in another home meet, on September 17.

The Nighthawks blanked the host Notre Dame-Fairfield Lancers 3-0 on September 16 to improve to 3-0 heading into a September 19 clash with always-tough Masuk of Monroe.
Newtown High School’s girls’ volleyball team sandwiched a loss to rival Joel Barlow of Redding with a pair of wins over Lauralton Hall of Milford this past week to begin the season with a 2-2 overall record.
On September 12, the Nighthawks topped host Lauralton 3-0 (25-22, 25-16, 25-19). Kyle Dandrea had seven kills, seven digs, and three service aces; Mylis Post compiled six kills and added three aces; Kayla O’Grady had five kills and three aces; Cassie Ekstrom tallied 10 digs; Tonya Tucker recorded five digs; and Meghan Logan piled up 20 assists.
The Newtown Youth Wrestling Association (NYWA) invites those interested in learning about wrestling to come to an open house from 6-8 pm in the Alexandria Room of Edmond Town Hall, 45 Main Street, on September 25. NWYA concluded last season as co-champions of the Western Connecticut Wrestling League. There were also several individual, state, and regional championship titles earned.
