  • NUSAR Acquires Aluminum Boat For Better Diving Platform

    When Newtown Underwater Search And Rescue (NUSAR) members respond to aquatic emergency calls, they soon will be doing so in a new custom-built dive boat designed to maximize the volunteer organization’s effectiveness on the water. NUSAR recently acquired the 20-foot-long aluminum dive boat, which replaces its 19-foot fiberglass dive boat. Viking Welded Boats of New Hampshire fabricated the boat to NUSAR’s specifications.

    Newtown’s State Rep Mitch Bolinsky (R-106) has challenged lawmakers to block an automatic 16-percent gas tax hike, scheduled to take effect on July 1, 2013.  The wholesale gross receipts tax on petroleum is scheduled to go from 7 percent per gallon to 8.1 percent, percent, with Newtown residents paying some of the highest gas prices in the state.

    When nominations for the Citizen Service Before Self Honors Award, sponsored by the Congressional Medal of Honor Society and the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation, were received in December, there were overwhelming nominations to recognize the valor and selflessness of the teachers and staff at Sandy Hook School during the events of 12/14.Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation President Tom Wilkerson said the nominations for the award came from across the country.     During a special meeting of the Board of Education on Wednesday, April 24, an expenditure of up to $65,000 from the Sandy Hook School Special Revenue Fund was authorized for providing pre-construction services for Sandy Hook School. Public Building and Site Commission Chair Robert Mitchell explained his board has been dealing with the state’s Department of Construction Services to prepare to accelerate the design phase of the Sandy Hook School site recommendation, which is scheduled to be determined by the Sandy Hook School Task Force in early May.
