  • Fire Potential: Red Flag Warning, Wind Advisory Issued For Sunday

    The National Weather Service (NWS) in New York has issued a Red Flag Warning for southern Connecticut, including Fairfield County, and Long Island from 10 am to 6 pm Sunday. The weather service has also issued a Wind Advisory for the same area for Sunday from 6 am to 6 pm. The combination of strong winds, low relative humidity and dry fuels will create "explosive fire growth potential," according to NWS.

  • GE Funds Meet ‘One Of Newtown’s Greatest Needs’

    A recent $15 million, multi-year grant through General Electric has brought the Parks and Recreation Department staff’s years-long desire for a community center within reach. The announcement Monday was “a very big surprise, pleasant and exciting,” said Parks & Recreation Director Amy Mangold, noting that her department for years has envisioned a community center that would broaden its ability to meet the community’s recreation needs. “This donation will help us meet our needs to get the project started sooner than it would have had it been done with just town funding,” she said.

  • Time To Fill The Fire Trucks

    Members of all five of Newtown’s fire companies will be outside two of the town’s food markets this weekend, collecting donations for FAITH Food Pantry. The 13th Annual Fill The Fire Truck Food Drive will take place Saturday, November 23, from 9 am until 2 pm. Food, personal hygiene and cleaning items will all be accepted on Saturday, as will financial donations. Everything will be delivered to the non-ecumenical pantry located in the undercroft of St John’s Church in Sandy Hook Center that afternoon.

    President Obama has ordered flags lowered until sunset. A proclamation from the President is calling for A Day of Remembrance For President John F. Kennedy. The five-paragraph proclamation, issued Thursday, November 21, calls on Americans to remember the President who was assassinated 50 years ago today, "whose vision lives on in the generations he inspired."

  • School Board Hears Financial Report

    When delivering his monthly financial report, school district Business Director Ron Bienkowski recommended the Board of Education approve an emergency replacement for a district truck during the board’s November 19, meeting. Mr Bienkowski explained the school district has eight vehicles, and five of those are overdue for replacement. According to Mr Bienkowski, the average age of the fleet is nine years old.
