Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue’s 27th Annual George & Timothy Powell Golf Tournament, which serves as a fundraiser for the company, will be on Monday, July 21. This year the tournament will have play at Newtown Country Club and Rock Ridge Country Club. Foursomes will be split between the two courses to accommodate everyone. The golf will start promptly at 9 am with a “siren” start, rain or shine. A scramble format will be used.
The Newtown Lions Club and Western Connecticut State University’s Sigma Chi Alumni Association will co-host the second annual Fore Sandy Hook Golf Classic on Monday, June 30, at Richter Park in Danbury. Registration and lunch will begin at noon; tee time is 1:30 pm. The golf tournament will benefit Sandy Hook Elementary Fund (SHEF), which continues to fund counseling to the children, families, staff, and first responders following 12/14. Cost for the Classic is $175 per person, which covers the 18 holes of golf and a cart, lunch and dinner, beverages, and snacks.
Cool temperatures and dry conditions greeted runners for the 40th Annual Newtown Parks and Recreation Rooster Run 5K, won by Newtown 23-year-old Kevin Hoyt in a time of 15:35, on June 14. Nearly 350 participants meandered through the Fairfield Hills campus; the course started and finished near the Newtown Municipal Center building. Cloudy skies gave way to the sun part way through the morning, and temperatures were in the mid 60s at the start.
Muggy conditions and a sparse crowd at Blue & Gold Stadium on June 13 were indicators that football season is still a long way off. But the annual Blue & Gold Game, an intrasquad Newtown High School football scrimmage, served as a reminder that the fall kickoff will be here soon enough. The Nighthawks concluded a two-week spring workout program with a friendly battle as coaches stayed on the field to give direction. Although the final score doesn’t really matter, for what it’s worth the Blue squad prevailed 46-19.
The 22nd Annual Jack Friel Golf Scramble to benefit Newtown Scholarship Association (NSA) will be drawing the association’s supporters to the links on Monday, June 16. “Newtown has two tremendous country clubs — Rock Ridge Country Club and Newtown Country Club — capable of hosting our popular event,” says tournament co-chair Mark Fries. “Both have added significantly to our event and we are pleased to support these fine clubs.” There are still a few spots available for those hoping to compete. Cost is $200 per player, or $60 for those who would like to join the event for dinner only.
Newtown High School's girls' track and field team placed eighth at the State Open at Middletown High School on June 9. The Hawks scored 19 points. Darien, with 45.75, took top honors. Jenna Calandro earned second in the pole vault event with a vault of 11-06.
The 40th annual Newtown Parks and Recreation Rooster Run 5K will start at 8 am on Saturday, June 14. The race begins and ends at the Newtown Municipal Center building in the Fairfield Hills Campus. All proceeds benefit the Newtown Scholarship Association.
