NYA Sports & Fitness Center is offering a free community fitness program specifically for seniors. The goal of this program is to provide a safe, fun, and informative environment to help seniors improve their levels of fitness. Led by certified staff at NYA, the program will incorporate walking sessions along with bodyweight and fitness band exercises utilizing the beautiful Fairfield Hills campus (weather permitting) and within NYA. The program will address balance, flexibility, aerobic and strength training along with basic nutrition to help participants increase their energy, coordination, and overall strength. It is free for Newtown's senior citizens. An optional lunch is also available each week for $3
Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue added two trophies to its collection recently. The company was presented with Best Overall Fire Unit and Best In Show honors following the Bridgewater Fair Firemen’s Parade on August 16. In addition, other residents received honors for their efforts during the annual three-day event presented on Bridgewater Fairgrounds the weekend of August 16-18.

Calling her play O Heavy Lightness “intense,” actress and playwright Newtown resident Jan Neuberger recalls that it was her passion for Shakespeare that led her to imagine the aftermath of the deaths of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet as experienced by two of that iconic tragedy’s secondary characters. The play will receive a reading on Monday, September 16, at 7 pm, in The Alexandria Room of Edmond Town Hall, 45 Main Street in Newtown. The event is part of seven days of programs that will lead into the 2nd Annual Newtown Arts Festival, September 21-22 at Fairfield Hills.

On Saturday, October 5, DigDeep Water will hold its second annual Walk 4 Water at Fairfield Hills. Walk 4 Water is an educational experience/fundraising event that raises funds and awareness on behalf of DigDeep Water, a nonprofit human rights organization that defends the human right to water for all people on earth through innovative education and water access projects. A three-mile walk around the campus — representing the average distance women and children in Africa typically must walk each day in order to retrieve water — will have participants experiencing both the distance walked and the weight of water once it is obtained. During the first half of the walk participants will be empty handed, and then during the second half walkers will be carrying two two-liter bottles filled with water.
Flagpole Photographers Camera Club will be kicking off the 2013-14 season on Thursday, September 19, with a general meeting and photo competition. It begins at 7:30 pm in the meeting room of C.H. Booth Library. The club is also planning its first hands-on workshop for the season, and will celebrate the opening of the third annual "Newtown and Beyond..." exhibition within the next few weeks.

Sandy Hook Organization for Prosperity (SHOP), a group of local business owners and community members from Sandy Hook, is pleased to announce the third annual Passport to Sandy Hook. The special event will take place on Saturday, October 12, from 11 am to 4 pm, in the downtown Sandy Hook Village area. Visitors to Sandy Hook Center that day will be offered “passports,” when they can then have stamped as they visit each participating business within Sandy Hook. Completed passports will then be entered into a drawing, with three prize packages worth over $1,500 total up for grabs. There will also be live music, a collection for FAITH Food Pantry, face painting, a bounce house, entertainment, and much more.
Organizers are hoping that next weekend will be a go for “Light The Sky With Light and Love for Sandy Hook Elementary Angels.” A tribute event for the children and teachers who were killed on 12/14, the event has twice already due to heavy rains and flooding leading up to June 9, and then August 3. Saturday, September 21, is the new day for the one-day carnival at Portland Fairgrounds. The event will run from noon to 9 pm, and will include rides, arcade games, children’s activities, several food and jewelry vendors, and more. There will also be entertainment including musical talents as well as magician performances. Kevin Ward is also planning on having The Sandy Hook Tribute Durango at the fairgrounds that day. At the end of the evening, a laser light show and fireworks display will take place to honor and remember the 26 angels of Sandy Hook Elementary School....
Dr Matthew Eliott from Mid-Hudson Vet in Carmel, N.Y., will speak at the Newtown Bridle Land Association open meeting on Tuesday, September 17, at 7:30 pm. The meeting will be at Newtown Meeting House. Dr Eliott will present a slide show on equine veterinary care and will answer questions from the audience.
