  • Custom Lighthouse To Attract Newtown’s Families To June 15 Festival

    Organizers of Newtown’s upcoming Lighthouse Festival are excited about the progress being made on a 20-foot tall, custom, interactive lighthouse being built for the event. The working lighthouse, designed by Duane Langenwalter of Thin Air, LLC, will incorporate symbolic references to the lives lost on 12/14 while shining a joyful light on the youth of this town. The June 15 Lighthouse Festival is sponsored by Ben’s Lighthouse, an organization dedicated to long-term support and healing of children and youth in Newtown and surrounding towns. The festival at Trinity Episcopal Church will feature music, artwork and theatrical presentations by local youths and adults as well as by professionals who are generously donating their time. Rooms throughout the church will be filled with activities and crafts for children and parents.

  • Memorial Day Service Scheduled At VFW

    The public is invited to attend a Ceremony of Remembrance on Monday, May 27, at the Newtown Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 308. The program will begin at 11 am, under the direction of  Past Post Commander Donald Monckton, master of ceremonies.

  • Flagpole Photographers Programs, Meetings And More

    On Thursday, May 30, at 7:30 pm, Flagpole Photographers Camera Club is offering a Portrait Photography Workshop with Star Wars characters as the models. The workshop will be in the lower hall of Newtown United Methodist Church, 92 Church Hill Road in Sandy Hook. The club will also host be participating in the Adopt-A-Cop Picnic Fundraiser on June 1, and will host its final meeting of the season on June 13.

  • Newtown Night At Danbury Carnival: Free Rides For Residents, May 29

    Danbury Mall will host a carnival presented by Powers Great American Midways Carnival, May 23 to June 9. Carnival games, rides and food will all be available. The carnival will be in the mall’s overflow parking lot, 7 Backus Avenue. Newtown residents are invited to Newtown Night, on Wednesday, May 29. Bring an ID with your home address on it to the carnival office and receive a free ride wristband.

  • Theater Review: Drama And Humor In Westport’s "Dining Room"

    Written thirty years ago, A.R. Gurney’s The Dining Room wrapped a season opening production at Westport Country Playhouse on May 19. The work richly explores the territory he has carved out and claimed as his own: the vanishing traditions of the American WASP, a social class who sent their sons to prep schools and their daughters to cotillions, who drank cocktails at the country club, and who wore ties and jackets to dinner in a dining room where they were waited on by uniformed maids who served lavish meals prepared by temperamental cooks.

  • Survivors, Caregivers Invited To Free Relay Ice Cream Social

    While Newtown’s 10th Anniversary Relay for Life is postponed to 2014, organizers felt strongly about honoring all local cancer survivors and caregivers this year. So Relay organizers and volunteers invite all local survivors and caregivers to a Hope Reception and Ice Cream Social on Sunday June 2 at Rock Ridge Country Club, 214 Sugar Street, from 2:30 - 4:30 pm. The event coincides with National Cancer Survivors Day (NCSD), when thousands around the world will gather to observe the 26th annual celebration. Newtown will be among hundreds of communities across the US and abroad holding such celebrations to honor cancer survivors and show that there is life after a cancer diagnosis.

  • CT Trails Day Offer For Newtown Bicyclists

    The Farmington Valley Trails Council will hold its 16th annual Trails-in-Motion bicycle tour event on Saturday, June 1, in conjunction with National Trails Day. The event helps to promote public awareness of the rails-to-trails initiative in the Farmington Valley Valley, attracting new and existing fans of the multi-use trail system. Newtown residents are invited to participate free of charge this year.
