Newtown photographer Marleen Cafarelli is preparing for her third solo exhibition of works at Newtown Municipal Center. The show, “Life in The 2nd Company Governor’s Horse Guard,” will be on display in the building’s main corridor December 3 to January 8. The photos may be viewed any time the building is open. The exhibit depicts three years of Ms Cafarelli’s documentation of the horse guard, showing all aspects of their events from the Inaugural Ball for Governor Malloy’s swearing in to annual training at National Guard Camp Rell in Niantic.
A Bead of Roses will host a Women’s Empowerment Seminar during which several guest speakers will share inspirational messages related to balancing life, career, family, finances and healing. The event will be Wednesday, December 4 , at Bridgeport Holiday Inn. The lead speaker for the event is Scarlett Lewis, author of "Healing Nurturing Love: A mother’s journey of healing and forgiveness." The book was written by the Sandy Hook resident following the death of her son Jesse on 12/14.
On Wednesday, December 4, at 1:30 pm, The Society of Creative Arts of Newtown (SCAN) will host Clayton Buchanan to critique the work of members. This program will begin at 1:30 pm at Newtown Meeting House. The public is invited to attend, free of charge. SCAN members are asked to bring one painting to this valuable critique. Mr Buchanan will have a brief conservation with each artist to see and understand the image from the artist’s viewpoint.
Art in Residence is an innovative gallery space devoted to showcasing works by established and emerging artists in a friendly, accessible environment. Art shows will be presented monthly in the Newtown home of Rosemary and Robert Rau. The couple, with a lifelong appreciation of art and backgrounds in design and business, are realizing a dream by creating an atmosphere where art can be viewed in comfort. Shows will feature works in all mediums representing a variety of schools including Realism, Abstract, Modern and Impressionism. By foregoing the traditional gallery white walls and institutional lighting, visitors will be better able to imagine the art in their own homes or business settings. Thus, the creation of Art in Residence. The first exhibition, “Creativity Takes Courage,” is already on view.
Six-year-old Lucia Rose St Lorenzo wants to make sure the Newtown Police Department on-duty staff will have a good Thanksgiving dinner. The daughter of Courtney McKenna and Antonio St Lorenzo of Newtown, Lucia Rose “committed a random act of kindness to kick off the holiday season," said her father. With help from a local restaurateur, the officers working on November 28 will have dinners prepared and delivered from neighboring Inn at Newtown thanks to the young resident's kind initiative.
Newtown Historical Society will host an open house at its headquarters, The Matthew Curtiss House, 44 Main Street, on Sunday, December 8. The public is invited to visit between noon and 4 pm, free of charge. During the event, when the building will be traditionally decorated for the holidays, the sounds of historic and holiday tunes will fill the air thanks to three guest musicians. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted to benefit the historical society. A collection box will also be set up for donations to FAITH Food Pantry.
The Garden Club of Newtown will hold its annual Christmas Greens Sale from 9 am until noon on Saturday, December 7, at Newtown Meeting House, 31 Main Street. Club members plan all year for this special event by drying plants from their gardens and collecting pinecones and other items to be used in decorating wreaths, swags and table arrangements for the holiday season. Fresh plant material such as winterberry, holly, rose hips, boxwood and a wide assortment of evergreens from the gardens of members are also incorporated into the designs. There is always an emphasis on the beauty of nature.
The Newtown Juggling & Circus Arts Club will be meeting from 3-5 pm on Saturday, November 23. The club will be at its winter location: in the Auxiliary Gym of Reed Intermediate School, 3 Trades Lane in Newtown. Members love to teach juggling and related skills. No experience is required, and all ages are welcome.
The Newtown Holiday Craft Festival will be presented Sunday, December 8, from 11 am to 5 pm. Presented by Artisans Alliance, the show and sale will be in the gymnasium of Edmond Town Hall, 45 Main Street. Admission is free. Artisans Alliance is a craft show promotion company dedicated to providing high quality arts and crafts events for the local, hometown artisan.
